The stupid snakes were stupid this year. The smart snakes were smart.
If you're in some parts of Africa I'd warn you about snakes, but on the Eastern part of the US it's just not a problem, the snakes just want to retreat. I pass a lot of them each year and al, they want to do is get out of harm's way (the hikers being what can harm them). I only had one snake coil up on me, it was a black rat snake, and it left as soon as I took a step back.
The two real problems this year was the summer drought and the fact that the mild winter let more ticks than Usual survive. Always carry some extra water in case your planned watersource is dry, and Learn general precautions for ticks and ticbourne illness and you should be safe.
