I have hiked the approach trail several times and would like to skip as much of it as possible this year. Does anyone know where I can find directions for forest road access to Springer Mountain, or as close as I can get.

This is how I did it. I stopped at a local gas station and bought a map. Without it I would have had problems. Truthfully, it's not too bad to get there. There are several unmarked forks on the way up.

Don't remember ANY unmarked forks - just turn right off the paved road and drive to the parking lot (left) and AT crossing with Springer up to the right.

My dad and I made it there in a Honda Civic with no problems. Only about 50 other cars had found the lot that day too. Not hard.

Here it is on Google Maps. http://goo.gl/maps/VGzpl ... right-click (or ctrl-click on Mac) and you can find "Directions to Here" from anywhere.

Actually, Google Maps might not have the best directions. The Georgia AT club has good ones on its website http://www.georgia-atclub.org/ ... it includes such can't-make-this-stuff-up lines as "turn north at Grizzle's old store (closed, sign for store is damaged)."
