Well,

Those who have camped out on New Years on Springer, what can you tell me
about it?

-Would there be room in the shelter?
-Is there a big turnout?
-Average temperature?
-In general what can I expect?

Thanks much.

It's not normally an organized event. Just pilgrims gathering at a place important to their faith. They usually make a campfire and drink adult beverages. Some SOBOs are usually finishing their hikes while some NOBOs are starting theirs. It's usually either very cold or very wet.

One superstition I like is the idea that the way you spend New Years Eve forecasts the way you'll spend the rest of the year. Spending NYE in a tent on the AT is an auspicious omen of hikes to come.

nothing too crazy - tends to be an older crowd, most folks hike in the area for at least a day or 2 - for early starters this is the best chance to run into anyone in the thin ranks

I enjoyed it. Good folks- good fun. Nothin too crazy. Wait, thats not right. Still a night I was happy to be a part of.

if there was ever a time to bring a tent and forget the shelter, this would be it. Plan on cold, but there are other things to to keep ya warm...Beats another night in a bar.

That was a wonderful post, Marta. I hope that you and your family have a great time over the holidays. You are missed
