After spending hundreds on trail software I found Delorme Topo US. http://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELibeCCtdItemDetail.jsp?item=32746&section=10742 . I like it becuse you can print from 1-9 pages for each map on scale of your choice. For $25 a year you can download unlimited sat images, boating charts, & USGS topos. You can view maps in 3D with varied exaggeration. For just under $100 it's a bargain to me. I am kinda a map nerd. Love looking about them & dreaming of hikes. With this program I can have the topo & sat view side by side & both will follow my curser. I am not affiliate with anyone that sells this just used it for years planning & dreaming of hikes & love it.

I used it my first AT section-hiking year. It was somewhat helpful for PA and a few other places, as I could download sections from (somewhat outdated) books which gave some interesting commentary on the trail, as well as waypoints. Probably (barely) got my money's worth. Note that REI members get a significant discount.
