http://www.backcountrygear.com/montbell-alpine-light-down-parka-mens.html Hooded Version or http://www.backcountrygear.com/montbell-alpine-light-down-jacket-mens.html without hood. I just got the hooded version on sale for $155 at backcountrygear.com. Maybe they will go on sale again soon. The hooded version is 16 ounces and would be warmer then Patagonia nano puff. They also sell an ultralight version http://www.backcountrygear.com/u-l-down-jacket-men-s-9.html which would be better for late spring / early fall.

I love my Montbell EX Light - about 7oz for an XL - no pockets, no frills. One of my favorite pieces of gear. I just got two of my brothers the Kirkland Signature jackets from Costco and they love them if you are looking for something cheaper.

nano puff is synthetic, not much insul really, and is quite heavy.
Down is lighter and more insul, but cant get wet.

I have a nanopuff (12 oz) , and a montbell ex light down (5.9 oz) , and a BPL cocoon hoody (9 oz)

I think the ideal layer is actually the BPL hoody, esp for sleeping with quilt since have the hood. But cannot get them anymore. Pity. Closest thing is the RAB Xenon, but it is heavier, about 12oz I think.

I use my montbell ex down mostly.

OR transcendent down jacket. Great jacket. I used it almost every day this year from Maine to Georgia. It was reasonablely priced too. Around 100$

It depends on how much you have/want to spend. The highland has 2 outer and 2 inner pockets, is 650 fill and weighs 12.2 oz for a medium. The U.L. Down has just 2 outer pockets, is 800 fill down, and is 8 oz for a medium. The EX Light has no pockets, is 900 fill and 5.6 oz for a medium. They are all nice jackets.

Higher rating fill is warmer for the same amount (weight) of fill. Like I said, I prefer the EX Light, and will just wear gloves, stick my hands in my pants pockets, or stick them under my jacket if need be.

The Montbell Alpine Light Parka (with hood) is probably the most versatile in that line, as it will handle some winter weather especially in the South. The MB Ultralight Down Inner parka is much lighter, but has a lot less down. My wife has one and brings it on every three-season trip as her warm layer and pillow. It's not really enough for winter in NC.

I had a Patagonia down hoodie, which was decent especially on the sale price. But last year I saved all my extra pennies and got the Western Mountaineering Hooded Flash Jacket. Mmmmm. Very nice.

For gloves I prefer Windbloc or Windstopper fabric. I have several pairs in different thicknesses -- light n2s fabric for hiking, and warmer for camp.

My only comment is to get gloves that you can get on easily when your hands are wet.

Another vote for the Montbell Alpine Light parka. Its a great piece of kit. Its versatile, perfect for shoulder seasons, and with layers a good winter piece. Check out Montbell's clearance section, some great deals there: http://www.montbell.us/products/list.php?cat_id=21

http://www.backcountrygear.com/montbell-alpine-light-down-parka-mens.html Hooded Version or http://www.backcountrygear.com/montbell-alpine-light-down-jacket-mens.html without hood. I just got the hooded version on sale for $155 at backcountrygear.com. Maybe they will go on sale again soon. The hooded version is 16 ounces and would be warmer then Patagonia nano puff. They also sell an ultralight version http://www.backcountrygear.com/u-l-down-jacket-men-s-9.html which would be better for late spring / early fall.
i hope you didnt get blue.

I just shoveled some more money to my favorite clothing/insulation/shell company, GoLite, for this down parka: http://www.golite.com/Ms-Roan-Plateau-800-Fill-Down-Hooded-Parka-P46883.aspx.

I think there are 2 or 3 days left at the sale price of $119 with free shipping and no tax.
