Preps for 25 Mar'13 launch going well. Have researched/ purchased 99% of my gear. Backpack system minus consumables running around 17 -18 lbs. I've saved all of my receipts and my observation is that my backpack system cost around $85/lb. My other observation is that it appears that goose feathers cost more than titanium! Mind you, I'm not complaining; following my today's 12 mile conditioning hike, my great- grandaughter said I acted like I was "stoked". I replied that I wasn't certain what "shoving wood into the fireplace" had to do with anything. She replied, "Huh"! It appears that I'm going to have to learn the lingo of the young, if I want to successfully communicate with what looks like a pretty young crowd hiking the trail.

Jetlag...good luck on your hike Bro (that's new age lingo for brother I believe). The goose down is worth the price (on sale), the titanium is not. I have two sets and never use them, always keep going back to the 24 oz Foster beer can. The pot, stove, wind screen, pot holder, and sack weigh 3 oz total...hard to beat. I do have to use the titanium on a short hike tho trip just to say I've used it. Have a great hike.

Wood is to stoking a fire; as your excitement is to stoking your mind/body.

Rain Man:

Did I hike with you over the Smokies in '05 along with Butterfly Moon and Happy Hiker?

Will be jumping back on-the-Trail at Atkins, VA. late January.

I would use goose down for things like a sleeping bag, and titanium for a wood stove. Don't get them mixed up.

I think my gear and clothing averages about $10 a pound, and its light and simple enough.
Trouble is I have about 100 pounds of the stuff, and keep foraging for more.

I don't keep records.

Embrace your youth Jet-Lag - don't fight it and I'm glad you are stoked to hike but down is an important trail term though:

down with whatever people are doing - "I'm down with that." or just "I'm down."
keep the stealth spots and anything secret on the down-low or just the d.l. "Hey, have a shot of whiskey out of this flask but keep it on the d.l."
when someone is going to do something fun like hitch into a town to have a pizza and you want to go. "Yo dude, I'm down with that."

With a sub 10 lb base, I'm not sure I wanna know what my gear cost per lb. heh heh heh. My down bag was spendy enough...I hope that bag lasts a good long time. I'm guessing somewhere near 200$/lb .....shhhh don't tell my husband :P

Have a fun and safe trip!!
