Earl Shaffer (crazy-one) was the first soulder to march the entire AT.
Joined Air National Guard, Volunteered for active duty, served about 6 years flying fighters during Viet Nam era, left active duty and finished with National Guard. Left Guard when they switched from fighter planes to tankers--no more fun--nation at peace by then. What do I check/ Guard--Air Force--or Guard?

USA. 1950, 1951. I think. These things get a bit vague after a half century or so. Anyway. It was a week or so less than two years.
It was a fun and interesting two years as a draftee. But I did not go out of my way to get killed in the Korean War. I would have felt silly to be seriously injured in a war that struck me as somewhat less than important -- somewhat about what I feel about Iraq.
For what it's worth. I trained as a Military Policeman at Fort Dix and served at Fort Devens, MA for nearly 18 months until someone decided to send me overseas.
I arrived at Fort Lawton, Washington, with two days less than six months to serve -- too late, according to Army regulations, to qualify for actually going overseas.
Being a thinker I figured out how to bounce arround Seattle and Rainier National PaRK for a couple of months before someone caught up with me and sent me to a desert testing station 30 miles north of Yuma, AZ.
There I drank beer, drove around a crew of civilian electricians, and hiked through the desert for three months, until finally the Army sent me to the Texas Panhandle for discharge.
My final six months in the army almost convinced me to reenlist. But I resisted.

I was on orders to go to Vietnam ("that little conflict overseas", as John Prine phrased it), but orders were cancelled because I didn't have enough time left. They asked me to re-up. Yeah. Right. I left and didn't look back.

Why do they station Marines on ships?

Man ...now there's a phrase I haven't heard for a while -- "nickle o'nasty"
I can still see the main gate at Lee Barracks.
I rotated out in March 71, just about the time the rumors about Vicenza were starting to surface. When you were there in Mainz was the jump school still running out in Erbenheim at Wiesbaden Air Base ?? While in the 1/509 I was assigned to the jump school as an instructor - Those were the good old days !!

Got out as an E5, buck Sergeant. Went to college, stayed in the Reserves, made E7, Sergeant First Class. Went to OCS and was made an Officer and a "gentleman" (mo money, too!:cool: ) Desert Storm for 3 months in 91- rear echelon weenie.
Retired as a Captain in 2002. 23 years duty. Miss the guys and the testosterone! Retirement check will be "mad money"...:banana

I am currently serving in Afghanistan. I was a Wyoming Army National Guard member that was deployed last July. Will return late 2006 and plan a thru-hike in 2008. When I get an opportunity to access the internet, the first place I look is here to keep up with my passion. HIKING.

I was gone by the time got there. I was 1/509th PIR headquartered in Mainz. Toward the end of my tour I got SD at the jump school on the airbase in Wiesbaden. I rotated back to the states in March 1971.

Talk about luck, I was drafted out of college and into the Army before they had a lottery, in Aug. 69 to Aug. 71. After basic training I was sent to Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Ga. for 22 months as a Personnel Specialist and didn't go to Vietnam either. How I got out of A.I.T. after basic i'll never know.....someone up there was watching over my Butt :)

I must say this, I respect and support every one of you that have or are serving our great country but you forgot one group of people with out whom you would not be able to fulfill your mission, The US Merchant Marines. I personally have served in this capacity since 1998 and proudly support everyone of you.
I was drafted when the govt started the lottery in 1969. Out of the 10 guys that I got drafted with only me and another person are alive. The other 8 got killed in Nam. I ended up serving a total of 40 days in the Army. I got out on a medical discharge while going through basic training. I had my discharge papers signed even before I got to medical hold.

I was 18,19 and 20 when I was an RTO in the infantry in Vietnam. Most of the guys I was with were in that same age range. I re-enlisted to go back to Vietnam but my request for transfer was denied. I was rip **** that I couldn't go back. Vietnam was a lot better, to me, than being back in the land of the big PX. I was more welcome in Vietnam than I was in the states.

i would have loved to...e.o.d. was the greatest. but i was wounded in a little "mishap" and put out disabled. i think most police forces want their e.o.d. to be capable as line officers as well. i have responded to 3 e.o.d. calls for my towns police, just because they knew what i used to do. that was fun.

i was at Camp Hansen, Oki and French Creek at Lejeune. Recon was out there too, no?

When the Company was reformed in mid 2001, it was headquartered at Courthouse Bay, where it remains today as the 2d Special Operations Battalion.

Right outta high school in '87 into the Army. 11B1P, Airborne Infantry. Basic, Infantry and Jump schools all at Ft.Benning, GA. Sent to 3/327th Infantry, 101st Airborne @ Ft.Camble, KY.
Light infantry?!?!? I weighed about 140 at the time and carried almost half that many times. This is why I usually laugh at counting ounces.

My clothes were at Camp Foster but was attached to the 2nd MAU and traveled the whole year. I was only in camp about a week every 3 months...loved it! Went to Naval Gunfire School in Subic Bay in the Phillipines..thought I met the love of my life there..turned out to be the lust of my life, thats definatly for another thread!! Went to Mnt Warfare school in Korea and went to cold weather training in Norway with the British Marines.Somehow or another wound up in Sctland for awhile and had a cup of coffee in England. Overall I had a great tour in the Corps...like I said..wished I had stayed in.

After 20 years in EOD I retired, went to UMd on GI Willy then taught Middle School for 23 years. Retired again in 2003. Now I'm a network engineer for a NH school district. Plan on retiring again in June 08 to go MEGA SOBO. Life has become good :sun
Many of my friends went to work "de-mining" and doing UXO cleanups around the world. Good money I guess:-?
Went to Indianhead 1958 first time, then back for many refresher courses. Retired out of "Stump Neck" in 78.
EOD is catching hell nowadays. All you ex EOD guys and girls, think about joining National EOD Association. Great newsletter with incident writeups from all over the globe. Some scary reading there.

I was also there, onboard the USS Elpaso LKA 117. Left no long after the truck-bomb.

I'll never forget those crazy few days in October of '83. We (BLT 1/1) were an ACB unit, so after the bombing we mounted out and spent 4 days sitting on the Tarmac in San Diego, CA waiting to head to the Middle East. Things in our unit got real serious real quick.

There were still WW-2 Japanese soldiers coming out of the sticks and finally surrendering on Okinawa and Guam through the mid-70's. Enough was enough I guess.

I am going to try and lighten things up......What is the dumbest thing you did in the military.......but you didn't get caught? I'll go first.....
We were off-loading vehicles at Kadena Airforce Base, and some guys in my platoon dared me to drive a Mule off the back of a flatbed truck. Being the dumbazz that I am, I did an Evel Knevel right off the back of that truck. To everyone's surprise the Mule didn't breakup into 100 pieces. It never drove straight again, but it still ran and I never got in trouble. :D

Hey Hilwalker, ever get over to 548th EOD? I was stationed with then from 1975-1976.
Living in the old wooden World II barracks at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, IN, I was just about asleep in my rack (three sheets to the wind) when fire warden (remember them?) shouted fire. Without thinking, I staggered through the second floor door onto the fire escape then proceeded to jump off the little wooden landing. I landed butt first in a hedge, scratched and cut up pretty good but I didn't burn (BTW there never was any real fire) :D

Jump out of planes, travel EVERYWHERE for 3 weeks at a time, blow stuff up, work with TONS of foreign militaries, sample their chow, drink their booze. I don't think by no means this was the dumbest but I was young and learned a very valuable lesson from it...
When I was in California at 29 Palms for FROC school I stayed out in town with a girl one night and woke up late and arrived late to work. On the way there I stopped and bought "two" large coffee's. When I got to work the SGT asked why I was late and I said that I had stopped off to get CPL Ashley a cup of coffee! Well being as though CPL Ashley was standing right there he confirmed it as to be true. When he asked me to step outside I thought I was a gonner! Let's just say it took me awhile to repay that dept!!

Thats the unit I was attached to! I was a radio operator (2531) / FO for them. That was in '82-'83.Called in fire for everything from battleships to cobra's. I sent so many rounds going the wrong way I don't think they really knew who's side I was on!!

There was a unit bus that left at 0600, but we were too busy keeping up foreign relations to catch it, and we decided to just pay for a cab.
We got to the town square at 0630 to grab a cab to the base 3 miles away. There was a crowd of about 20 others there, and only 3 cabs for the whole area. Realizing we weren't going to make it in time, we began running the 3 miles slightly uphill on the icy sidewalk. We made it with a couple of minutes to spare, but my left ear swelled up to twice its normal size due to frostnip from the icy arctic wind that blew on it throughout the run.
I'm glad the nickname Lt. Bearpaw had already stuck, or I would have been Lt. Lobster Ear after that.
Still, looking back, it was worth it. :o

I cared Fofer. Granted, I never thought about it too much until we needed supplies on a short notice but MPPS supplies helped us out tremendously on a couple of short-notice trips.

Jim, I never knew you could sleep over in the Christian Science Reading Room in Olongapo. You musta been a regular.
Do you remember the name of the bar with the crock/alligator in the pen out front? I bought a duckling from a kid for a peso to throw to the beast, and didn't have the heart to do it. Carried it around all night and it filled my shirt pocket with duckie-doo.
I was always at the Florida Club or the club with the mechanical bull, but after a snoot full of San Magoo's, they all look the same.:D

I don't know how many times I woke up in Alongapo City and had about 30 minutes till morning formation. Those were the days!!!:banana
Let's see how many times did I fall in lust in Olongapo....maybe a thousand!!With the exchange rates in the '80's a bar tab was mere pennies my friend!!
Got to Clark AFB and decided I needed one more time...took the "chicken train" all the way back to Olongapo for one....more...time...!!!! Talk about a adventure!! Barely made it back before the plane left. Can you say barracks restriction!!

I was in the US Infantry at Ft Lewis Washington in 1978-79 and then went to Germany..I did "Arctic Trainning" at Fort Wainwright Alaska for 2 months in Jan-Feb of 1980.

Living in the old wooden World II barracks at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, IN, I was just about asleep in my rack (three sheets to the wind) when fire warden (remember them?) shouted fire. Without thinking, I staggered through the second floor door onto the fire escape then proceeded to jump off the little wooden landing. I landed butt first in a hedge, scratched and cut up pretty good but I didn't burn (BTW there never was any real fire) :D
Wow, I may very well have slept in that same barracks! That was were I learned my preference for the upper rack, in case the other guy comes in liquored up enough to barf over the edge.
To be fair, the fire watch was one of the most tedious watches I've ever had to stay awake through.
I was a little too gleeful when I was getting to my last few months of enlistment -- found myself transferred to the fire fighting crew. I kind of enjoyed the school, though. Workin' a hose team can be fun.

A good friend who spent years stationed and deployed at both NAS Sangley Point and NAS Cubi Point had a video shot from the fantail of the last US Ship to leave the PI. The "ladys" were all standing at the pier waving goodbye. Now this guy was a man's man, a retired Master Chief, and he said he cried like a baby, saddest sight he ever saw. So ends all good things. ;)
