is small game hunting allowed on the at how often are there animal threats on the trail should i bring a rifle or not 6 months is a descent amount of time alot of unknown variable to consider honest answers please god to go either way also know how to trap/fish if hunting allowed so a rifle not nessacary

not planning on going the survivalist rout but some skills are good to have in case of an emergency

Not needed at all. You'll be lucky to see a few squirrels each day, and won't see any if you have a rifle in your hands, which would be the only game that is even possibly legal except pigs. The AT is not the Alaska wilderness. Your never more then a three day walk to a road or town. Forget New Jersey or New York with a gun, you will just end up in jail. You would be better off carrying an extra day of snickers bars just in case.
