Anyone get any interesting hiking/trail related presents for the holidays? I got a Garmin eTrex without even asking for one. While its not super necessary for the AT, its seems like a fun little thing to keep track of where I am and where I have been. I might also try my hand at geocaching.

A day of hiking without rain, and without (too much) pain. My wife shuttled me to 19E-Bear Branch Christmas morning, and picked me up at Carvers Gap (near Roan Mtn). Good views off of Hump Mountain, but then the clouds rolled in.

I received a base layer top and bottom (Sam's Club), collapsible stool (might be OK for a section hike), outdoor wool blend Cabin socks, zipper pulls (very handy), Dunkin Donuts coffee (for the trail), 2 mini rolls of duct tape. :) Waiting for tax time to buy a new tent and sleeping bag. I've decided on the 2 man Mountainsmith Morrison. Maybe the Kelty Coromell 25 degree down bag.

I got a completely worthless hydration pack from my father in law. I am 6' 2" 240lbs. I put it on and it looked like I was wearing a deck of cards on my back. He also must have pulled it out of his closet because High Sierra hasn't made this one in about 5 years, so no sending it back anywhere. I gave it to the eight year old, she said "What am I going to do with this? It's heavy and worthless". She then proceded to cut all the buckles and straps off so she could use them to sew a new strap on her pack to hold her Leki's. My wife did get me a nice hand-made scarf......

This makes me feel egotistically self-aggrandizing... but I'm stoked! I "stuffed my own stocking" with an EnLIGHTened Equipment Revelation X quilt-- 30 degrees and 30% overstuffed. I test-napped out in the garage this afternoon-- it was only 23 degrees in the garage, but I slept comfy warm for about half an hour-- dressed in a T-shirt, jeans, cotton socks and a beanie, lying on my old Therm-a-Rest on the garage floor! #totalgeekitude

Asked for spot head lamp; got storm. I wanted the spot cause it is slightly lighter, but I like the added water protection of the storm. Both are sweet.

I asked for SmartWool light baselayer. Got that AND HeatTech baselayer from Uniquo; I don't know much at all about the later, so I have homework to do.

Asked for and recieved PacerPoles which I'm extremely excited to try out. I'm a huge fan of poles, but these are a very different concept, so they'll be interesting to try. They're more durable than most poles which is good for me.

I got hooked up! Santa was very good to me this year. Got a Marmot Precip rain jacket, magnesium fire starter, Appalachian Trials book, the ATC coffee-table picture book that weighs a TON but has about 400 pages of awesome pictures, 2 pairs of Darn Tough Merino wool hiker socks, 1 pair of Wigwam wool socks, 2 pairs of synthetic undies, the Sea-to-Summit treated bug net, carabiners, beef jerky in my stocking.

But better than the stuff I got, was something I gave. A friend of mine is thru-hiking very soon and I filled up a 5 gallon Homer Bucket from Home Depot with a ton of small bounce-box type of presents, each one individually wrapped. Stuff like chapstick, ibuprofen, AAA batteries, handy-wipes, etc... I had a lot of fun with that and I know it was appreciated, plus it took her half the day to unwrap everything. That was the best part of my Christmas!

Apparently you are not married. The difference between your gifts and the gifts us married folks get is that you did not have to pay for your own gift :)

Be grateful for what your parents gave you, they will not be around forever.

Have a safe and happy New Year.
