So what piece of gear do you consider your best purchase or gift in 2012?

Mine is a tossup:

Western Mountaineer bag

PacerPoles -- I love using poles, but these are a totally different design which I've been dying to try.

PacerPoles were for Christmas; for all of 2012, I'll go with my Warbonett Blackbird which I got much earlier and which I love.

I had a huge year this year. I picked up a WM Alpinelite as a end of year bonus/ christmas present and my girlfriend got me a ULA circuit for my bday in November. I used both on a short 1 nighter but Im looking forward to getting out sometime in January as well.

I had an incredible year finally getting the gear I wanted. ULA Circuit, Enlightened Equipment Revelation x 0 degree quilt, REI Stratus Insulated Air Pad, Trail Designs Fissure Ti-Tri Stove, Merrell Norsehund Beta Mid boots, Montbell Alpine Light Parka, Goosefeet Down pants and booties, Winter gaiters, Microspikes, Winter Mittens and a few odds and ends. I think I am finally done.

Well maybe a few more things next year. :)

My Cuben fiber zPacks Hexamid Twin Tarp (http://www.zpacks.com/shelter/hexamidtwin.shtml) with bathtub groundcloth and no netting for my shoulder season hikes. Saved me about a pound off my Lunar Solo and is large enough that I can forego a bivy sack.

Solomon trail runners to replace my boots that were done in by the PA rocks. However, I did not buy much this year, so they arguably are my worst purchase as well (major fabric rips at less than 500 trail miles into the pair). No blisters though!

Poopsy scored a silk cashmere sweater for 3 dollars at Goodwill. A very nice mid-layer indeed

My Big Agnes sleeping bag and the thermorest mat slips into a pouch under the bag so you never slide off the pad and it's plenty roomy.

Bought myself an Osprey Exos 58, took it out yesterday for the 1st time - felt really solid. Great pack, lot of super features, not that heavy.

Have been dealing with some pretty serious back pain, this bout since September...........think that I need a pack with some more support than my ULA, we will see.

Next section hike is in March.

After more than two years on the market, I finally sold my "underwater" house in October.

I challenge any of you to find a single piece of gear that is as effective at helping you hike as a mortgage release letter from you bank. :banana

Nothing earth-shattering, but the Montbell Crushable Lantern (http://www.montbell.us/products/disp.php?p_id=1124462) shaved a few ounces from my pack weight and has made long fall nights in my tent more comfortable.
