I haven't been through the Smokies since 2004, and I'm planning a section for next month, so I was wondering about the regulations concerning tenting, fires, and permits. I heard that they might make a $20 flat rate to enter the park or something but I'm not sure if/when that is coming into effect.

When the online reservation system is operational - and they haven't given us a date yet other than "2013" - it will cost $4 a nite with a maximum charge of $20.

The reservations are for campsites as well as shelters.

The new rules won't be ready next month. So there will be no charge for your backcountry permit. Unless you are a thru-hiker you will be required to get free reservations at your intended shelters or campsites. This info is available at the GSMNP web page along with the phone number to call for the reservations.

No problem with campfires. Campsites and shelters have firepits and fireplaces.
