I may be able to buy the Western Mountaineering bag I've been wanting used. Seller says it's in "like new condition, about 10 years old, and only used about 4 times." properly stored and all that stuff... Price would be around $300.00.
This bag would be 400.00 new.
What would you do ?? :-?

I searched and searched and found a brand new (with tags) WM on BPL for $360. The deals are there. Id also look for past things sold and see what the buyer feedback was.

Currently there is a Ultralite posted here on Whiteblaze that may worth looking into if your looking for a 20 Deg.

I'd keep looking. No offense to the seller, but if I could get a new one for almost the same price, I'd do that. 10 years is a bit long for me.

Good luck.

This is just me but used sleeping bags are just one of those things I'd be wary of. And $300 doesnt seem to be much of a good deal matched against current new bags, especially for a 10yo bag.

I agree with Old Hiker. Got some yrs on it. Saying it was only used four times, well, maybe so, MAYBE NOT. With that many yrs I would be careful. Tread lightly. an extra $60-100 for a new with the peace of mind knowing you will get a new WM bag I think it's worth the extra do remi.

I agree with others that 10years may be a bit of a stretch. The one I got was an Alpine lite reg. Backwoods.com recently had 25% off any item (including WM bags). Keep an eye out there and maybe call an see if you can get a hint as to when the next will be.

Thanks... I passed on a new one for $330 earlier this year.
$400 - $300 = $100

Thanks for reminding me of that sale... I was a day late.... Doubt they would've had my particular bag anyway....

I buy a lot of used things. I never pay more for a used item, than I believe I can quickly/easily resell it for.

If there are pics and the loft looks good, and bag is as-new, no damage.

Id offer them $240 shipped to my door.

If the bag has no damage, you can sell it for $200-$225 easily.
Plan on washing it .

I would wait for a sale and buy a new bag. a ten year old bag is old no matter how many times its been used

every deal has to stand on it's own merits.... I just sold a WM Highlite for $195, only used on 3 hikes, the bag was never wet, stored in the original breathable sack indoors. So I think there are some good deals out there for used WM sleeping bags, like any purchase of a used item, you have to do your own DD and make your selections. But $300 for a used bag does sound a bit much, especially a 10 yr old bag.

The bid on the bag I was looking at is now $ 263 with 22 hours left.. I'm guessing it'll go up a bit more.
I'll pass on this one...
Thanks for the excellent feedback... Happy (almost) New Year Everyone !! :banana

WM makes a great bag, and the MegaLite is a great model. I bought one used ("10 times") on eBay for about $200 a few years ago and it was in excellent condition. I used it for about 30 nights over two years, took very good care of it, and sold it on eBay for $200. I did this because I wanted to get a WM Badger to extend the lower temp range of what I had available. Got the Badger lightly used from a backpackinglight member and it was also in excellent condition. So a lot depends on whether you trust the seller and are happy with the price. That said, I agree with others that $300 is a lot to ask for one that is 10 years old. However, if it was really stored well, it should be as good as new.

Tipi - most people don't actually know that the phrase, "God willing and the creek don't rise." actually doesn't refer to a creek or creeks as in a stream. The phrase refers to the Creek Indian Tribe. Sadly, we ran them all off.
