How tough are you? I used a Kelty Light Year down 40. Good bag for the price.

I would highly recommend a high quality used sleeping bag over a cheap one - - presumably, you are going to be thru-hiking, right? You are not a weekender. Get a good bag, a good pack and a good lightweight shelter (the so called "big three") - - used is fine.

As it gets warmer, usually somewhere in southern VA most Northbounders trade their warm bags in for lightweight trekker bags with a rating of 40 degrees or so for summertime - - these would be cheaper.

I purchased the Kelty Light Trekking bag rated to 20* for 76$ in 2011.In reality it is only good to 30*.I got it for the not too cold months and to keep from carrying my MH Clouds Rest 5* bag which is 3lbs and a few ozs. I got on sale for 179$ in 2010.Cyber shop around,check E-Bay.A good down bag will last many years if taken care of properly.I survived an attack of the down bag eating mice a few years ago and I repaired it myself.I would have really been PO if I had paid the big bucks for a WM super lite bag.I'd rather carry an extra pound or two and keep my wallet a litter fatter.Just sayin'....

thanks. I think MH makes "ok" gear actually but the only way to talk the OP into a Feathered Friends or Western Bag, or a Montbell would be after a few nights in the teens with freezing rain - - then, Mom or Dad's credit card will show up at the NOC!
you get what you pay for and the cheap man spends the most.

You can find some really good sales right now if you spend time looking. Here is one bag i found on backcountry.com. it's not the best or lightest, but 15 degree down with 50% off, its a good deal for around $130 IMO.

I recently picked up a Kelty Cosmic 0 Degree down bag for right around $115 shipped. I've seen them a few times (backcountry.com, steapandcheap.com, and a few other of those daily deal type websites) for around this price range. Nicely made, nice fit and warm.

STP has the Wenger 30deg 800 down bags for cheap...with the right code they can be had for under $100. The long is on sale, straight up, for $119 right now, I believe.
