Linder,
Hi there, I was hopping to see a thread for the class of 2014. I am planning on being part of this class, although I have a lot to learn. Will you be attempting as well? I am very excited to start planning this amazing adventure but at the same time, I am extremely nervous, I will be starting alone and while I am looking forward to the challenge and independence, I am scared.

Ps. Your join date is my birth date!!
:)

Not sure if I'll be able to make it happen for 2014, but I'm going to try!

Hi Rosebud, I am doing the whole AT starting in April 2014. I have started working out, due to my age I don't want to get left behind. I am really interested in the Vermont section (my family came from Vermont, I was born in N.H. )

I've looked for that thread and did not find it, so just started a new one. Very exciting to know its just a year away!!

You know Rosebud you can always start out with other hikers and then when you are ready you can go on your own, from what I read, you're never truly alone on the trail. Not sure of your start date but you are welcome to hike with me.

It's my plan; as long as I can get my house finally paid off this year, I'm in!

I'm planning on a thru in 2014! I'll be making many sacrifices in order to make it happen, but I can't wait!

Hi Austin, I grew up in El Paso. Well this trip is going to be great! My trail name is BA Baby Face Nelson, the BA stands for bad ass, it was a name I called my brother before he was killed. I am looking for a second job so I can have everything paid off when I go, or else I would have to wait a year, and I really don't want to wait. When do you plan on starting in 2014?

To find the thread search the posts using 2014 as a keyword. It was started by alaska moose (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/member.php?15598-alaska-moose), 04-05-2011 12:51.

Linder, I'm planning to start in March or April. Don't know yet! Bonsai, what a small world! Glad I won't be the only Austinite out on the trail!

Hey there, I have been looking on Facebook and can't seem to find it, can you send the link by any chance?

Linder, I think what I am mainly concerned about is the hitch hiking way of life that is necessary when thru hiking. Being a young woman, I just don't want to be put in a vulnerable position.. I am planning on taking self defense classes but it still is nerve racking. I would love to start with you, what pace do you plan to start with? And I know you said you wanted to start in April, is that negotiable? I was thinking of starting march 14th. I had a close friend pass in 2011 and March 14 is his birthday.

Has anyone figured out what technique will be used to purify their water. I was originally thinking a filter but I am worried about failure and weight. Now I am leaning towards drops but I am afraid that some sources are to shallow to collect without a filter.

Lastly, any remarks on making/ using a alcohol stove? It seems like a gret way to says on weight/money as well but I have never used/ made one.

Rosebud, as a female, I'm also concerned about hitchhiking and never plan to hitch alone. I'm also planning on taking self defense classes before I go. Mainly for my own peace of mind and that of my parents'. I will be 32 when I hit the trail, but I'm still their baby and they keep joking that they are going to send a helicopter to fly over me during my hike. I was tentatively thinking about starting on March 15 or so, so maybe we could meet up. I feel like it's far too early for me to nail down my plans in that much detail just yet, but it's a thought! See you on the trail!

I'm going south bound in June 2014. Way exited, but going to be broke all year paying off credit card and squirreling away necessary money. Will be so worth it :)

Hi Rosebud, sure you can hike with me and my step daughter "pepper". I really have no set date, I thought about April just because it would be warmer, March is fine. I will be using one of those pen water purifiers, weighs little to nothing. I always think it is smart to hitch hike in pairs or a group, too much can happen. March is good, my brother David also passed away in march, I use to call him BA Baby Face Nelson, so I am taking that name as my trail name. You can e-mail me at [email protected] if you have any questions. Pepper and I are planning 3 hikes this summer in the Sawtooths.

It's painful to post here, my trip was suppose to happen to this year. But...life happened, I won't let it happen next year.

That said, I will be leaving on my bicycle from Long Beach during the first week of Jan 1 2014, I will arrive in Georgia right around Mid march. From there, It's just a quick 2100 mile jaunt to my ultimate destination.

I'll be taking a quick vacation out that way this year to see a few friends and provide as much trail magic as I can muster!

Waiting for the next 12 months to fly by!

Wow! Riding a bike from Long View to Georgia, you're my super hero!! I would love to do something like that!! How many miles a day will you be riding? You will have great hiker legs by then. It will be close to a year all-n-all with the ride and hike, way cool!!

Hello! I'll be hiking NOBO in 2014. I'm taking a gap year before college to thru hike. Super excited for this, and to meet my fellow 2014ers of course!

What kind of tents is the clas of 2014 using? I'm going with the EchoII, 2 person tarp tent, less than 2 lbs . My old back won't carry too much weight, going to trim everywhere.

I guess the class of 2014 is excited about their hike!! As with all forums and websites the more we know, the better we will be prepared, the better our hike will be. I am really hoping the class of 2014 will have more thru hikers and more that complete it!! Thanks for the info.

I''m planning on heading NOBO, leaving sometime in March '14. I'll be bringing my dog with me. As of now, I'll be solo and wouldn't mind some canine-friendly companionship! :)

I am tentatively planning a 2014. I tried in 2011 but got off after 650 miles due to family stuff. If I hike in '14, it will be a NOBO in mid April or SOBO around June 1st. Haven't decided yet.

For anyone worried about starting alone or hitch-hiking alone, don't fret. If you start between about the beginning of March and mid April, there will be more people hiking (and Camping) around you than you will care for. As an example, my first night (Springer Mtn) in 2011 saw about 15-20 thru hikers, a church group of about 50, and a college group of about 75 all camped around the shelter. Every shelter for the first couple of weeks was similar (15-20 thru hikers).

I too am seriously working on a 2014 AT thru-hike. I'm thinking of doing the Pinhoti first and then continue on with the AT, probably starting in mid Feb. All I need to do is stay healthy and prepare.

I hope to join the class of 2014 as well, but I'm not 100% I can come along just yet. I have almost all of my gear and can't wait to get on the trail! :banana

I'm planning a 2014 NOBO hike starting sometimes between March and April (I'm retired so my timing is flexible). Looking for someone from Birmingham or Tuscaloosa Alabama area that plans to go in 2014 so we could get together or talk about the hike.

Most likely you will never be hitching into town alone, there will be other hikers wanting to hitch a ride too, you will never be alone too long on the trail :)

Safety: One word ... okay TWO words ... Neck Knife [use a toggle instead of a knot] ... doesn't have to be heavy or large, just enough to show you mean business.

AS I've said before, if only Meredith Emerson had had a weapon instead of relying on her "martial arts" skills and her Lab ... Unless a Dog is Trained, don' expect it to protect you ... OKAY, maybe a Pit Bull, maybe a German Shepherd, a Doberman, a Rottweiler ... but NOT a Lab.

READ the rules about Hitching ... It's ILLEGAL in certain States ... BETTER to keep the shuttle list handy than to worry about an arrest ... and wear that neck knife.

Sounds like the name of an Alfred Hitchcock movie ... "You will never be alone too long on the Trail" ... maybe Rod Serling's Twilight Zone?

Thanks for the chilling thought.

I have been seriously thinking about going next year also. I was worried about being alone, ( yes, I'm a female ) but after reading about all the other women going solo I'm thinking I might do it. It would be nice if a group of us could start together and then if we decide to head out on our own later we could. : )
