wondering will temps be cooler in april in georgia/virginia or in may in nh/maine? what type of sleeping bag or quilt would you use?

I wouldn't hike NH or ME in May. The Whites could still be winter-like as can ME. It's also mud season.
In April and May unless a big storm hits the normal temps are in the 40's overnight. Most hikers like a 20 or 30 degree bag. As the other poster said New Hampshire is not so hikable in April, late May is a little better.

The temps in GA/VA in April and NH/ME in May will be about the same, though it depends where you are in the states.

Heck Maryland weather is crazy in April!
Millinocket Maine Averagesit can get as high as 50 and well below freezing - 3 degrees for the lower mountains
