Lt. Dan and I hiked from the Devil's Marbleyard to the James River Footbridge yesterday. The weather was great!! We drove back to the Marbleyard trailhead and there were quite a few rescue vehicles and police. A group of hikers, three ladies and a man, had hiked up the Marbleyard and had separated. The man was only 26, heavy and had a pacemaker; he had been missing for 3 hours when we arrived. Apparently he had decided to get off the rocks and fell. He was knocked out for a while. They finally located him and it was midnight before they got him off the mountain. I guess he's doing OK.
The hike there can be slick, rocky, and strenuous. Don't why folks that are so out of shape with medical issues attempt such a hike.......

About 10 or 12 years ago, we were hiking the section of the AT near Crabtree Falls in VA and my husband was stung by yellow jackets. He started swelling up so we decided to get off on an abandoned side trail that led a couple of miles to a public campground. We walked into the campground right into a bunch of emergency personnel. They were in the middle of a body retrieval. It was on the middle of summer and sweltering hot. A camper who was very overweight, and had a heart condition, had drank a few beers earlier that day and decided to do the steep hike to the falls. He collapsed and died of a heart attack halfway into the hike right in front of his wife. He was already dead when she left him to go back to the campground. I cannot imagine how she felt on that day :(

Oh My!! I'm glad they found him. If he fell in one of those rock crevices, I can imagine it would have taken them a while to find him.. so glad they did. :)
I love Devils Marbleyard. It's a rock scramblers dream !! :)

HikerMom - the man fell into a 40 foot hole.....Another hiker heard his moaning. He's very fortunate.

Wow.... he is a lucky man. I can't even imagine what that poor guy went through. Don't know why he tried in the first place but sooo glad he's OK. :)
Well... There's more to the story. I wonder if it might not have been an accident.
