THAT IS GREAT!!!:banana:banana:banana:clap:clap:clap

I quit smoking 4 years and 2 months ago, and wish I had done it before. I used the patch, though. I tried cold turkey and just about killed the hubby and child.:D

Keep it up!!

For dieting I suggest what I call stealth food.
i.e. stuff that is very filling for the number of calories involved.

Breakfast - large bowl of watery gruel eaten with a leaky wooden spoon, or if that is not quite to your liking, then hot oatmeal, prepared from scratch, plus some apple and cinamon. But don't rule out the watery gruel until you've tried it. Eat your fill, and then some.

Through the day - tea with skim milk

Supper - more watery gruel, or perhaps lentil soup, made from scratch, with a diced up parsnip, carrot, onion, maybe a tomato, perhaps come vinager. Biggest bowl you can stomach.

I absolutely love lentil soup (homemade of course, w/lots of veggies) doused in vinegar!!! I can stomach a pretty BIG bowl.

Congrats on the smoking!!! I quit in October of 2000. Used the patch too. I wore it for less than 2 weeks, then one morning I forgot to put it on, and hadn't thought about smoking all that day. That was it. Haven't had a craving since. Very weird.

Posting the item below for someone:
I think this is hilarious! I NEVER HEARD CREATION EXPLAINED THIS WAY BEFORE !!!

In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth and populated the Earth with broccoli, cauliflower and spinach, green and yellow and red vegetables of all kinds, so Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives.

Then using God's great gifts, Satan created Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream and Krispy Creme Donuts. And Satan said, "You want chocolate with that?" And Man said, "Yes!" and Woman said, "and as long as you're at it, add some sprinkles." And they gained 10 pounds. And Satan smiled

And Satan smiled.

And God created the healthful yogurt that Woman might keep the figure that Man found so fair. And Satan brought forth white flour from the
wheat, and sugar from the cane and combined them. And Woman went from size 6 to size 14.

So God said, "Try my fresh green salad." And Satan presented Thousand-Island Dressing, buttery croutons and garlic toast on the side.
And Man and Woman unfastened their belts following the repast.

God then brought forth running shoes so that His children might lose those extra pounds. And Satan gave cable TV with a remote control so Man would not have to toil changing the channels. And Man and Woman laughed and cried before the flickering blue light and gained pounds.

Then God brought forth the potato, naturally low in fat and brimming with nutrition. And Satan peeled off the healthful skin and sliced the starchy center into chips and deep-fried them. And Man gained pounds.

God then gave lean beef so that Man might consume fewer calories and still satisfy his appetite. And Satan created McDonald's and its 99-cent double cheeseburger. Then said, "You want fries with that?" And Man replied, "Yes! And super size them!" And Satan said, "It is good." And Man went into cardiac arrest.

God sighed and created quadruple bypass surgery.

Then Satan created HMOs

Ok, this weekend at SoRuck decided it. I'm going to lose weight. I put out waaayyy too much efort and my ankles are still a lillte sore 2 days later. First thing's first, drop the crap from my diet. The first things to go are french fries, fast food, soda, and cut back significantly on the beer. I don't drink a ton of it, but do enjoy the occasional cold one. Other changes to come later, including adding exercise and other dietary changes. Starting weight, 262.4. Thanks to Roots' Trail Journal and my hiking partner, Doc (gldwings1) for inspiration. Lost 2 pounds this week! Much better than the 1.5 over the past two weeks. Possibly TMI, but I think some of it is "hormonal." When I did ww 2 years ago the weekly weight loss, or lack thereof, was definitely...er...in a four-week pattern.

I have been doing a lot of Tae Bo (the "ultimate boot camp" seems to be particularly hiking related...lots of squats, lunges, and knee bends) and I got out both days this weekend and I think that helped. Following ww points pretty religiously too. 2 hours of hiking equals a slice of pizza.

Good luck everyone. Especially to you guys on weight watchers...I've been there! And I'm still there!

Just got back from my meeting. After a really horrible week and a half (my friend and I took our teenage girls to see Phantom of the Opera in Louisville, stayed the night at a hotel and ate five meals at restaurants - including two huge buffets; then there's the junk food my husband stocked up on for the Super Bowl) I was thrilled to find I'd lost 2.2 lbs in the last two weeks. Not drinking as much anymore. I have cut my diet as well. I just dont eat as much. I need to get away from soda's though and fried foods. I just love my wings. On the upside I have lost a total of 15 pounds since I started.

I quit smoking 9/07 and I am trying to lose the 15lbs I gained. Man you are doing great if you quit smoking AND lost weight. I am in awe !

Started getting in shape after a winter of hibernating and working as a cook at a bar (eek!).

Got a scale that checks bodyfat%--Started at 186 and 20% on febuary 1.

now weigh 178 with around 17-18% bodyfat, hoping to lose around 3-5 lbs a week from now on, and to hit the AT below 10% bodyfat, spend a month there, and hit the CDT around 6-8%, 160 lbs or so.

The first pounds are always freebies--I've had to do this a bunch of times (wrestled in college, always put on weight over the summer)

Get your bodyfat % calculated somehow. BMI's are worthless. Set a good target weight. Weigh yourself first thing in the morning and before bed every night. Keeping a chart can help. Set weekly goals. If you need to skip dinner sunday night to make monday morning's goal, then you need to skip dinner. Expect fluctuations, but make sure that you give them a downward trend. Losing weight is simple, but not easy:

I've been running 4-5 miles a day. The best advice you can get for exercise is to pick something that's fun. If it's torture it makes working out a lot harder. Cross training also helps mix things up.

Basics of my diet: I don't use exercise as an excuse to eat more. I start off every meal with a large glass of water, a glass skim milk, a piece of fruit, and a large mixed-greens salad with no cheese, crutons, avacodos, or dressing. I eat from a small container that is a non-ambiguous size. I love (real) skim yogurt. Tea (no cream/sugar) is a good drink if you just need to taste something.

(calories in)-(calories out)=(pounds of change)/3500

Great thread, I just found it. Saw a few posts back that it's OK to join. I'm in. Today's a.m. weight was 195. Aiming for 185 by Easter, 175 by Pentecost. I can couple Lenten resolutions with weight goals.

I'm going after the pounds with a combination of 5-times-weekly runs, and better eating habits (single servings, no snacks).

My current weight loss plan includes counting calories each day (the calorie king program tracks it for you and reduces the daily intake based on where you are at) and I try to get to the gym 5-7 days week. (Three days of weight training and the other on cardio). I have another hiking trip coming up and I am trying to get in some training hikes as well. In the past I have always done well with the weight loss until I get in the 220-225 range and then I can't seem to make any progress. I really have to fight the 'screwits' as in "screw this I'm eating some ice cream! The last few weeks have felt like the Bill Murray movie "Groundhog Day". Same day no change. I know that many people working on losing weight go through this. How do you guys do it? What punches you through the wall?

Oh, and did anyone see the news on diet soda? Researchers believe it causes people to gain weight. Somehow it slows down one's metabolism. I don't remember all the details, but it seems that somehow the brain is tricked into thinking it is getting sugar, which causes it to send signals to release more insulin. Evidently, sugar doesn't need to be in the bloodstream for insulin to be released. The taste buds send signals to the brain, which in turn sends signals to the pancreas.

Gator- Thanks for the tip on the cardio I'll give it a whirl and see what shakes up. I have thought about taking a daypack/bookbag in the gym with me and put one of those dense medicene balls in the pack as a sort of extra hike training. Thoughts?

Lilred- I have heard that about the soda. Part of me is skeptical because what is bad for us this year is good for us next year and vice versa! Plus I usually drink one can of diet soda with dinner and that is my "splurge" Part of me is reluctant to give that up and gets real defensive at the thought. Your advice however is good, maybe I'll give myself a soda fast for a week and see what happens. I always justified the soda because I counterbalance it with enough water to offset the sodium. I dunno! Anyway thanks for the advice.

...I've never brought my pack to the gym but others have mentioned it. My opinion on the ball is that it might be too heavy too low in your pack, and could pull on your back. I'd suggest just packing it full of clothes, water bottles, or in some fashion that it simulates the weight distribution of your regular pack.

If you are using a treadmill, racheting up the incline is helpful too.

Do you mean that your calorie program suggests that you decrease your calorie intake further as you lose weight? That is what you will need to do as your weight decreases. Last time I got heavy I decided to do a little experiment. I had my Resting Metabolic Rate measured before I started my diet. My RMR was 1860 Cal/day. That did not include calories used for excersize etc. I was on a 1500 cal/day diet and I lost weight fairly quickly at the beginning and then very slowly at the end. I had my RMR retested once I was at my goal weight and now it was 1530 Cal/day. No wonder I was barely losing at the end ! If I wanted to maintain my new weight, I would need to basically stay on my diet and if I wanted to lose more weight I would need to decrease signifcantly below the 1500 cal/day.

Ashman
02-20-2008, 10:41
Critter- Yes the program rduces my daily calories as I reduce myself! Kinda sucks but makes sense

Gator-I wasn't thinking a full pack just a day pack, but I see your point. I think they also have some weight vests that I could sling on. One of the treadmills can adjust the incline as high as 30 deg and as low as -3 deg. I use that one alot

Try to get used to just water with meals, especially at home. If you want something besides water at home, try Celestial Seasonings' Zingers to go, they have green tea with a slight bit of sugar and stevia (good stuff). 16oz/ 40 cal. I limit myself to one diet soda per week, if that.

Publix used to carry them and quit, my wife found them online from the company's website. They also have an instant ice tea that rocks, you sweeten it with stevia and it is actually healthy.

Oh, Ashman, consider doing circuits for weight training, pick three exercises that work different muscle groups, IE, bench press, lat pulldowns (or rows), and squats (or hack squat machine) and go from one excercise to another without rest, your muscle groups will rest but your heart/lungs don't get a break. You can get into the aerobic range like this lifting weights. It isn't a recipe for powerlifting or building big muscles, but it'll help you shed pounds. It also breaks things up a bit, a little variety.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one in the same boat. I have a ww meeting tonight and am dreading the weigh in.

Consider it all positive feedback. You know what you did or didn't do. You know what you need to do or not do. Now just promise to do better!

I am a WW leader and I really feel bad for those who come to the meeting dreading the weigh in. (That's why we have those no-weigh in cards) It is even worse when someone stops coming because they have gained. They won't get back on track if they stop coming. Weight loss is hard! We know that, since every WW leader, receptionist, employee... has done the program. But it can be done. There are changes that need to be made toward a healthy relationship with food. Pretty good. They then cleared the dishes and brought out a big plate of hot fresh cookies. Oy Vey! I stayed awayed from it. Doing good. I got back to my office and a client had sent a box of cookies. I ate two GGGRRRRRRRR. I was feeling pretty bad about it. I told my wife about it, she pointed out that I passed up the hot cookies for the prefab package ones! D'oh! All we can do is get up, dust off (the crumbs in my case!), and get back at it!

Go semi-atkins style most of the time, but leave out he greasy stuff. Then have a carb-up day (with cookies!) about once a week, the variation keeps your metabolism from adjusting to lower calories. Eat breakfast. Take a week off working out and then dive in at a higher intensity than you've been working out. Google "interval training". Eat a ton of protein 150 grms per day (tuna in water, low carb protien shakes...) and low-carb veggies to keep your muscles growing (and keep away from the ice-cream, potatoes, rice, starch, soda, candy or carbs of any kind except veggies, nuts, etc). Don't exceed 1500 calories per day. Drink coffee. Take vitamins. Eat wild salmon and "superfoods" and not processed packaged junk. Don't even go in the middle aisles in grocery store. Don't eat out (except on carb day, but don't go nuts...and don't let a little slip lead to a whole day of bingeing).

I should eat a cookie more often! Weighed myself this morning and I am down to 218! I am over the half way point to my goal of 190! I am very pleased with this. I have done a better job of tracking my calories and it is showing up on the scale. I haven't been this low in over 4 years, this is a major win for me, thanks for letting walk in this with you all.

Now the caution for the tale. I know that if I am not careful, this victory can be lost, and I know what the greatest challange to that will look like. Next week I am going to a convention in Las Vegas. I will be gone Sunday to Saturday. So let this serve as an early check in for Monday. In the past I have not done well with either food choices or exercise. That said I am setting my face like a flint and am going into next week with this battleplan. The provide a breakfast for us each morning. I plan to load up on fresh fruit and water. I plan to hold an apple to split mid-morning and mid afternoon. They usually provide an afternoon snack (usually cookies! OH VEY). I want to have fruit to eat instead during that time. I will most likely go out to lunch with friend from the convention. I plan on bringing protein bars for dinner or in case the fruit doesn't hold up well during the day. I plan on doing a short cardio workout in the morning and in the evening alternating between a longer cardio workout and a weight workout. I think my room will have internet so hopefully I will be able to check in.

Hey all, looks like you guys all have a great start, and now that I am 1 month smoke free, I wanna get in on the action. I'm looking to drop about 30-35lbs by June when I leave from Katahdin. I've been involved in wrestling for 23 years, the last three as a head coach. With the emphasis placed on responsible weight loss the past two years I'll throw a couple ideas your way if you are plateauing and can't seem to start losing weight again...we'll also see if I can follow my own advice.:D Someone mentioned the scale that measures bodyfat%. This is a great idea, but you have to make sure you are hydrated for it to give a proper reading. BMI is outdated and flawed, especially for anyone who would consider themselves athletic.

I'll throw myself out there...I am 6ft, weigh 265lbs, gained 7lbs since quitting smoking. I have been working out for the past month and have been able to tighten my belt 1 notch since starting..even with the weight gain...muscle weighs more, so my gain isn't all fat. Anyways, computations will say my BMI is somewhere around 33%, why this is flawed??? Well I'm built like a college linebacker(was one in college). I have a 50inch chest, no man boobs:D, and a 39inch waist. I do have love handles, but other than that, don't have a huge gut, just a small one, I can see my abs when I flex them. The weight loss I want to achieve would put me back at my playing days weight, and probably around 10%-12% body fat.

I know I should be much fatter than I am according to my weight, but if you're working out and building muscle pay attention to how your clothes are fitting you, if they're getting looser and you didn't lose weight that week...who cares, your body is responding to your efforts, and isn't that the idea? You will have weeks where there won't be any weight loss, maybe your body is adjusting to your new weight, and maybe your body is building muscle that week and so you don't lose weight.

Back in 2003 I went from 255 to 227 in two months, my wife went from a size 14 to a size 6 in the same time following a program that included 3 days of weight training and 3 days of cardio every week for 30-45 minutes each workout. On top of this we ate the portions we wanted from the following food lists.

http://www.beachbody.com/category/michis_ladder.do

Michi's ladder is from the beachbody system but is excellent in that it is well balanced and chosen due to the fat burning properties of the foods. The top tier is obviously the best, but if you stick to the top 3, you should be ok, obviously with the third being eaten from in moderation. While we were on this diet we ate out once a week and usually went for cheese pizza. We've gained our weight back, but that was our own fault. I just throw the diet plan out there, as they aren't recipes, just foods that you can use, that "will" burn fat. YOu have to stay honest to the foods though, or it won't work. Remember, one bad day can ruin the week. I know because since quitting smoking i have been going up and down 5lbs every 3 days it seems.

Anyways, some of the people here on WB helped me stay honest from the evil cancer sticks, so maybe the magic will work for the weight as well!

My goal is 5lbs by next Friday!

About the only positive effect of smoking is it raises your testosterone level a bit, this is why most middle-age men gain weight when they quit. You might try DHEA and boron supplements.

Congratulations to all here for the efforts you have done to lose weight.

2 years ago, I was a rotund 300+ pounds. For a guy thats 5' 11", I was a human bowling ball.

Today, things are a bit different. Right now I'm at 218 and owe it all to hiking, and to be honest, I was sick and tired of being sick and tired.

There are so many diets out there that promise the world, but the common denominator in all of them, is excersize. I find this to be true.

Yes, diet (I hate that word) it an important part. I think most of us pretty much know what's good and bad.

The enemy.....the bathroom scale. It is discouraging to get on something every morning to see what you have lost. It can ruin your day at times. I only weigh once every month. The other thing is that clothing fits better in my opinion.

Being in the food biz all my life, I basically used it as an excuse. "Would you trust a skinny Chef?". It was a major cop out. I had lost and gained and lost and gained.
I feel that it's a training of the mind and dicipline. Trust me, when you get the results you are looking for, it gives you motivation to keep going. People in general treat you better, your self esteem goes through the roof, and all around are a more happy individual.
I know that the people treating you better thing is kinda crappy because of your appearance, but this is a fact.

It's nice to look in a mirror and see the progress you make.

When folks in general see that you have lost weight, your personality changes for the better and you treat those who struggle with more kindness and compassion. You are willing to take them by the hand, figuratively, and help them out.

I gotta tell you, the gratification that you get from doing this is worth just as much as losing the weight yourself.

On the downside of this story, I still smoke about a half a pack a day. It used to be 2 1/2 packs a day. I figure if I take my time with that, that it will go away. I pray that before I hike this season, that I've quit. I still feel the huffing and puffing up the hills....imagine how much easier it will be.

Yes, a lot of folks gain weight to compensate for the oral fixation of having the cancer stick in your hand, but of what I've seen, after a looong hike you are atuned to take up other things to occupy time. That's what my case is.

Oh yeah, congats to EMAN for his major loss of weight!!!!

Best of wishes to all and hike like hell! You will enjoy it more!

My mom gained weight when she quit smoking. She said her doc told her that smoking deadens the taste buds and when you quit they perk back up. Many who quit experience weight gain simply because food tastes better but since it happens so gradually, they don't consciously notice.

Combine that with increased calorie burn from working out...and your body naturally will want to increase calorie intake, you have to convince to live off of what you are eating.

Part of that battle is to eat 5-6 times/day. That, in and of itself will boost your metabolism (it slows when your starve yourself). You still have to burn more than you ingest. If you don't gorge yourself your insulin level will remain more stable and this helps control hunger, after you do this for a few months you can't consume as much food at one time 'cause your stomach shrinks somewhat. Eat 100 cal (half of a protein bar) if you can't eat a proper small meal after 3-4hr.

One word of advice...cut down on the fruit and up the fiber and veggies (there are ways...).Are you sure about this? Read about Red Hawk's (from another forum) thoughts of diet and exercise (make sure you see how all the conflicting diet studies are made to conform to each other at the bottom):

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste
them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your
heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the
life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and
corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an
efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat
chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable).
And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of
vegetable products.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that
means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the
goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio? A: Well, if you have a body and
you have fat, your ratio is one to one.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise
program?

A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?

A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!!.... Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil.
In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad
for you?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the
middle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should
only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?

A: Are you crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It's the best
feel-good food around!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?

A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?

A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

AND......

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition
and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those
conflicting nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than
Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than
Americans.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks
than Americans.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than
Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and
suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you!

Sue, why don't you come up, camp in GA and do some TM for this year's NOBO class? From experience, nothing will break up my own personal pity party faster than doing something for others. It was what sustained me thru the recovery from the accident in 2004. If you got TM in 2005 at Dicks Gap, Fontana, Newfound Gap or Davenport Gap from a lady in a wheelchair or using a walker - you've probably met me......

Don't make me come to FL and sing the damned Barney song - you'll be too sick to eat if that happens :D.

I was a size "0" (how you can be a zero is beyond me but I was!) all though my teens and early twenties. I could eat and eat and eat.

Mid-twenties my scale began to slowly creep up and I was to busy being mommy of 4 to notice.

I woke up one morning in my 30's and I was fat, I was wearing a size "7"!!!! Boy was my perception of fat off.

Now I am in my 50's (post menopausal) and twice that size, do the math and feel huge!! However, the average female is a size 12-14 so I'm not really fat just average....

Hell, I don't want to be average I want to be spectacular!!!!!

I do miss the days when I could eat and eat and not have a worry cross my mind about should I eat this??? Then eat it and feel guilty. Oh well, that life and I'm living so I should be happy.

I'm a bit over 6"1" and am trying to get down to 175. Muscles would be fine also, but they are increasingly hard to generate for some reason.

I went from 185 to 195, thanks to a steroid for an artery condition and six weeks in Alaska last spring and summer. I've dropped to 180 and am working on another five pounds, but it's going pretty slow. The first 10 were easy. The next five okay. The last five are being difficult.

My technique is simple. I just use a smaller plate and avoid snacks.

Well I finally bite the bullet and rode my bike up to the gym. I have been avoiding it as there is a 2 mile stretch where there is absolutely no bike lane and the road is only one lane in each direction. With new development it is now a major access to I-10 and some really big trucks barrel down it.

I held my breathe with each passing truck but it doesn't take that long to peddle 2 miles.

I'm going to try and do this a few, well at least 2 times a week.

No change for 2nd week in a row. Same as with Almost There. Definite change in way clothes fit, but I want to see lower numbers on the scales. I guess I'll just keep on as is and we'll see if the scales decide to change.

Yeah, 2nd week in a row, no change for me, I've been as much as a pound lighter on Thursday or Friday, but then I go back up by Monday.....I'm gonna stop worrying about it so much....it will come off eventually, or else I'll just do my infamous soup diet after I hike the second week of April.

Where did you go to this time LilRed?

Me, I've been stuck in NYC for the last 9 days..... I don't think I've gained any, but I didn't lose any either.... but now I'm home this weekend, and I'm gonna get some serious exercise in tomorrow and Sunday....

Hpe everyone is doing fine out there.... Other than working too much this past week and the coming week, I'm doing great.

As of this evening, I'm holding at 272 pounds.... down 23 since the start, but no change over the last week....

Been getting in a fair amount of exercise, but the food intake has been a bit more than usual....

Well, this week I did a bit better... down 3 pounds this week to 269, total of 26 pounds lost.

FYI, the wife and I will be in the GSMNP beginning on 3/18 - 3/21... Getting some trail time in, and down time from the Internet...

Great hike no change on the weight front. I find when I get back my weight is often the same but when I get off the trail my "hiker metabolisim" lasts a while and really knocks off pounds when my diet goes back to where it should be.

I lost a shade over 80 lbs on my thru-hike last year. It changed my life. I have put 20 back on. I love beer.

Total loss of 11.2 since we started. This is slow going. Seems like I put it on faster than I'm taking it off!

Going for a section hike in a little over a week. I'm meeting Zak aka Cerberus aka Nest in Damascus and heading to the Grayson Highlands and Mt Rogers area. Maybe that'll help! It sure will help my attitude, even if it doesn't help weight wise!

Definitely some weight off the shoulders being away from work for 2 weeks!

You'll get there. Great job so far. That's how most people lose weight, my mother included. You could follow the right nutritional habits and exercise for a few weeks and not see any results, but all of the sudden the weight starts to come off. Your body needs time to adapt to the lifestyle changes and to know it's ok to release the stored fat.

Well, I'm back in Nashville... Hated coming back from the mountains.

Smurf (my wife Jan's nickname) and I spent late Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in the GSMNP hiking around... Was supposed to be there Friday Morning, but the 4:25am earthquake in Illinois shook the house enough that we thought it would be a good idea to check it out in case something needed worked on...

Anyway, we did about 18 miles over the 3 days... Clingman's Dome was socked in Saturday Morning, but we descended down Goshen Prong and Little River... Was great to see trilliums beginning to bloom, and LOTS OF WATER!

Anyway, for the weight check-in.... I started on 1/3/2008 at 295... Last night I weighed in at 265... 30 pounds total loss....

Congrats to CindyFromIndy on starting her thru hike, and to the Dinos on the birth of their great grandson....

Hope everyone is going fine out there.... Weather is warming up, and there's no good excuse for not being out in it. I've had a great time over the last week getting out and enjoying nature.

I'm still holding at 265 lbs. right now.... Need to find something that will get me off of this plateau I seem to be on....

Anyone got any good ideas?

After a complete medical workup to determine why I have the beginnings of Cor Pulmonale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cor_pulmonale), my docs have discovered I have moderately severe obstructive sleep apnea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_apnea) - and possibly some central apnea as well. I'm being fitted for a CPAP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuous_positive_airway_pressure) Thursday night. The neurologist that diagnosed this feels that my weight gain may be caused in large part by the apnea (http://sleepdisorders.about.com/od/obesity/a/sleepweight.htm) because tests on my metabolic rate indicate that I should not only be burning the calories I normally eat, but should be losing about 2 to 3 pounds a week while I'm actually not losing at all. Guess we will see.

If you have sleep apnea, you will see a HUGE difference once you get the CPAP machine. My husband had sleep apnea. His was due to being overweight. When he lost all of his weight last year, he quit having to use the machine. He does still have high blood pressure, but they said it is hereditary since it did not lower once he lost the weight and with all his exercise.

So everytime you put the CPAP on at night you could possibly wake up having lost weight...AWESOME!!! I hope it works out well for you. It really helped Gungho, a lot. Good luck and let us know how it works.:)

I am holding at around 210 myself I am giving you the same address I am giving myself, I need to get back on my eating program and I need to commit to writing everything down. Most of the times when I hit walls in the weight loss game it is because I have gotten slack with writing stuff down. Easy to say hard to do, let's do it together!
