So I picked this up at Sams sunday, I was just in there shopping and ran across this jacket and got one just as an inpulse. I saw someone had already posted these pics on another forum so I am copying and sharing. Any thoughts on this jacket? It is pretty light, 8 or 9 oz I believe. I picked up a medium in black. I believe they are made in vietnam, not sure but for the price, it's a heck of a nice down jacket. Very lightweight too.

They are nice jackets and there is a thread somewhere that discusses them in detail. Two of my brothers own one.

I'd much rather shop at Costco's, too bad they're few and far between. However, you can order it online.

Maybe it's just me....but aren't the baffles on this jacket kinda....I dunno....flat? I thought the idea of down insulation was LOFT; those baffles look like there's barely anything in them. Or are the jackets just flat like that from packing and the down hasn't fluffed up yet......? I would figure those tubes would have to look like they were inflated for the jacket to actually insulate. I'm really not being sarcastic.......if these jackets live up to their tags they would seem to be a killer deal compared to the store brand stuff they sell at Acadamy.

Loft doesn't matter nearly as much as we thought.

That looks just like my Polar Edge (also made in Vietnam) that I got at Academy original price is $49.99 and is on sale for 50% off in stores. No clue why the website doesn't show the sale price.

I was able to pick up the polar edge model at my local Academy marked down to $19.95 last Friday. Looks like I'll be putting it through the paces this weekend in the smokies and will report back.

I saw these and checked them out at Costco recently... nice jackets, very similar in feel and overall loft to my Mont Bell jackets; I own three of the damn things. At that price, a damn good deal if you don't already own, er, three of the damn things already.

These are 'down sweaters'. Similar in design to the very well known Patagucci ones. (http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/mens-down-sweater-jacket?p=84673-0-961)

Not meant for standing still in deep winter, but a light, compressible piece roughly equivalent to 300 wt fleece in terms of warmth w/o the weight and bulk. Unlike many of the Patagucci clones, the Costco one with 800 fill will be very close in performance and quality.

Layer it under a shell and it will be very toasty indeed.

Unlike fleece, probably not good to perform aerobic activities in even during cold weather, though. (Down is more susceptible to moisture)

Every piece of gear has a plus or minus.\

I would never buy because I know how they treat ducks in vietnam.

These also look very similar to the down jackets at JC Penney currently on sale for $30. Not sure about the fill though. http://www.jcpenney.com/dotcom/coats-and-jackets/jcp%25e2%2584%25a2-down-puffer-jacket/prod.jump?ppId=pp500960355&searchTerm=down+jacket&dimCombo=null&dimComboVal=null&catId=SearchResults

Threads on other forums mention this jacket. The fill power is lower (650) but not bad. The fit/small details like the zipper seems "cheap".

The overall consensus seems is that it is not a bad jacket just not a great one. (http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/forums/thread_display.html?forum_thread_id=71199) For the price, though, you can't beat it. Probably a good item to show in the pack if on a budget.

Getting out there is the important thing. :) I hiked the AT in a thrifter fleece and did OK. ;)
