I could use some recommendations for my hike as I haven't done any significant backpacking in over eight years. Below is my gear list for this years' thru hike. As it stands, it looks like I will have a base weight of ~25lbs before food and water. Everything in green has been purchased. I'm open to any changes that are suggested. Especially for any gear that has yet to be purchased or decided on. I'm still in Afghanistan and wanted to hold off on purchasing a pack, bag, and shoes to make sure everything fits right. So please feel free to blast away.

Just one item I would question is the Ipad Mini, can the phone handle some of the same apps? What pack are you thinking of using?

The weather is mostly warm by mid April, just watch out in the Smokys. I lived in Ft Lauderdale for all of my adult life until 6 years ago when I heard about the trail. Moved to Damascus Va after my first hike. My trail name is Seven Im starting the first week in April. See ya out there.

Ipad is going to be a liability. Just use your iPhone.

I'm going to end up taking the iPad Mini only. I'm going to be blogging from the trail and find that it is pretty easy to type on. If I need to make a call, I'll just use Skype.

As far as backpacks go, I'll probably purchase a Gregory. I still have my old Gregory pack, but it was a gift for my 13th birthday (probably won't fit well). I'm afraid that if I buy one now, I'm going to have too little or too much space leftover.

Some observations:

ground cloth might not be necessary
consider 2 smaller water reservoirs instead of 1 large one (it'll be easier to trf water to hydration system)
consider lighter swiss army type knife with scissors and tweezers
needle for draining blisters
reduce first aid kit to only essentials
lighter
hand sanitizer
sunscreen (no leaves on trees)
consider aquamira (http://www.antigravitygear.com/aquamira-kit.html)instead of filter
ear plugs
duct tape

I would also suggest a lighter pot and would link to an antigravity gear 3 cup aluminum pot (http://www.antigravitygear.com/antigravitygear-3-cup-aluminum-non-stick-cook-pot.html), but it is not listed on their site anymore. Don't know what happened to it. You might also consider an alcohol stove from antigravity gear though.

Good Luck and Have Fun!

See you on the trail,
