Now that MSR has dumped and discontinued their Simmerlite stove---and it's my fave---what would be a good MSR replacement? XGK-EX? Whisperlite Universal? Whisperlite International? Just plain Whisperlite? All these stoves are heavier than the Simmerlite so what are THEY THINKING!!:(

Yeah, it's in their white gas line up and was I think their lightest white gas stove.

I use a Whisperlite International when weight is a issue and a Dragonfly when it is not.

My Whisperlite is almost twenty years old and still works. I had to replace about $10 of part a few years ago.

Agree, in 20 yrs. Whisperlite still good; 10 yrs. Simmerlite, good, I really like the stove. Rebuilt pump a couple of times, finally got a new model pump last year.

Maybe it was not selling well? Dunno.

The Dragonfly filled one niche...the Whisperlite another.

The MSR stoves last a while, so hopefully you won't have to replace it any time soon.

Tipi - If you like the simmerlite just get a new one. http://www.sportchalet.com/product/301526_11778.do?kwid=msr+simmerlite&gclid=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sportchalet.com%2Fproduct%2 F301526_11778.do

I'm guessing that the simmering problems are mostly due to over-pressurizing the fuel bottle. The whisperlite can have the same problem. The solution is not to pump it too much and keep the orifice clean.

Tend to agree. I own both stoves myself. One I had on the AT. The other one was a gift. :)

It is a lesson learned the hard way. Stove won't light so pump it some more. It's sputtering so clean out the orifice while it is still sputtering. Jump back when it gives you a Coleman fuel haircut.

My go-to option is to just go ahead and stockpile a couple as they do seem to last and I've seen them for sale online---so far.

I thought those back breaking loads were a point of pride for you. Going soft?

I ordered a simmerlite on sale from the sportchalet link given above. Got a box that said Simmerlite, instructions that said simmerlite, a pump assembly, and a stove that doesn't fit the pump. Seems to be a windpro. Feh.

Why not just go with a Svea 123?

Ha!

My circa 1975 Svea 123 is still going strong. Best all-around WG stove out there IMO. Just a skosh heavy.

I had a Simmerlite and it was fine but wanted a multi-fuel so sold it on ebay and bought the new Whisperlite Int'l on sale at REI this past summer.

Why not just go with a Svea 123? And never buy another stove again.

I think the XGK simmers better than the Simmerlite, based on comparison last weekend at 8 degrees F, though I guess it's a bit heavier. I used the Simmerlite on my AT thru, but converted to alcohol for the PCT and CDT using a Featherfire which is a really neat little stove. I now only use the Simmerlite for winter hiking.

I have had a great experience with my Primus Omni-Fuel (http://www.trailspace.com/gear/primus/omnifuel/). Not the lightest, quietest, or cheapest stove, but it burns anything liquid and can use cartridges. I also like that the fuel pump--similar in design and operation to the MSR fuel pump--is mostly metal rather than plastic, and it has a simmer control (as said above, overpumping can limit its effectiveness). The thing seems bulletproof, and is great for larger groups or when the weather is chillier than ideal for alcohol.

That said, my friends and I have also had decades of good experiences with Whisperlites. I bought the Omni after one trip in 2004 when both my friend's and my Whisperlites broke on the same day. We cooked jambalaya over a campfire that night in an old coffee pot--probably the best Zatarain's I've had.
