Hi guys, I'm new to the forum. I have not done much hiking in the past and am planning a week long trip on the AT in Georgia-NC. I have been looking at a few options for sleeping bags but do not know enough about gear to pick a good one. I have a small budget of around 100-200. I have been looking at the: Sierra Designs Ridge Runner 30 on sale at campmor for 109, the kelty cosmic down around 109, and the mountain hardware ultralamina 32 for around 160. I also noticed the Marmot Arroyo 30 which seems like a good bag. Well please help me out, as I said, I know almost nothing about hiking. Thanks.

Kelty Cosmic down has received good reviews and is fairly light. 20F is generally an all-around more versatile temp IMO.

I know thiese are not on your short list, but I am a big fan of the Big Agnes bags. They save weight by not putting insulating material on the bottom side. Instead they have a sleeve for a pad. This not only saves weight, but keeps the pad in place.

The Big Agnes bags do look nice, but most are out of my price range.

Also don't discount the idea of looking for a gently used bag someone is trying to sell. Mont Bell and Western Mountaineering are 2 quality sleeping bag makers - there are others.

Look for a used Western Mountaineering bag. Or you could venture out and buy a quilt.

The Thermarest Haven is on sale (2011 ed) on REI Outlet. Less than 2lbs and it's rated for 20 degrees. They have regular and long in the outlet for under $175 (usually $250) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178246
