Hi all
been reading for a while now the more I read the less I know. Thinking I need a pack and some good shoes, I bought hiking boots http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/scarpa-ranger-ii-gtx-active-boot-p189917
dont have a pack yet thinking when I have some stuff to put in one I might be closer to know what size. I love alchol stoves even like the smell, but it seems most carry gas stoves.
can you thru hike and rely only on resuply at trail towns ,so many questions
one last thing im in the uk looking to head over to find some nice sunny dry weather.

Most carry alcohol stoves, but canister gas is very popular and growing. You can resupply about 3-5 days while on the trail in the South, but there are areas North that are farther apart. We do have a lot of nice sunny dry weather, but, "You can't get to Maine without walking in the rain".

Happy Trails

Here's a great place to start, Mags's page: A Quick and Dirty Guide to the AT (http://www.pmags.com/a-quick-and-dirty-guide-to-the-appalachian-trail).

Usually 3 or 4, almost never more than 6.
First thing on your list should be a guide book. I recommend David Miller's A.T. Guide. That will tell you all the resupply points.

so every 3-4 days I will find myself back in town shopping "not sounding like fun yet" LOL

You do not have to resupply every 3-4 days by any means. The spacing of the towns makes it convenient. You can do every 5-7 days...or more.

David,
Study Paul's (aka Mags above) website, as I'd suggested above in a previous response. Almost all your answers can be found there, and it'll only go to add to your excitement.

Keep in mind that you'll walk right through a number of towns, as the AT dissects 'em.

This is another great site that has the entire list of towns en route: http://www.sophiaknows.com/atdb/postoffices.php. It will help you visualize where you can stop and/or resupply. The AT guidebook has the most information, and it's all currently applicable, so if you haven't already gotten yours, do so. I just received mine in the mail and the book is phenomenal, almost to the point where it seems you have to step away from the trail to find adventure. It's that in-depth, which of course is a good thing.

I didn't use any stove... so I don't know if that effects resupplying... but when I hiked the AT I'd usually resupply every 6-9 days... I'd carry a lot of food at once, being a 19 year old on a shoestring budget... when I saw a good deal... aka three half-pound blocks of cheese for 5 bucks... I'd usually get 6 blocks of cheese and just go with it...

Everyone is different, but you learn so much about the trail while on the trail! I never sent myself stuff before hand and never ever ever came close to have any "food issues"... Relax... take it easy... and enjoy the ride... no need to stress out as your prep... everything will take care of itself! (at least it always worked that way for me!)
