Which bag is better: western mountaineering summerlite or a montbell ul super spiral hugger #3? Just trying to see if any one has an opinion on either and their performance in or at their temp rating

Both are good... it's like asking which is better - a Mercedes or BMW..

(I've got 2 Western Mountaineers and 2 Mont Bells and think they're all awesome)

Well put 10-K. When you're talking about high end equipment, it all comes down to a matter of preference, huh?

I have the summerlite and slept with it in 30deg weather wearing only underwear and a pair of boardshorts, no shirt on. That was also in a tent with neo-air sleeping pad, so the temp rating seems more then appropriate. I ended up ditching the bag for an UQ/TQ since I hammock, but it seemed like a decent bag. I can't comment on the Mont-bell

I kinda like made in USA a little better, but I am also curious as to how they both perform as in a quilt set up

BMW ;)

I've owned both and I agree with you.

However, the Mercedes dealership has expresso and pastries. The BMW dealership just has sodas and salty snacks... :)

The thing that immediately springs to my mind is, how does the elasticity of the MontBell bag affect its use when trying to push the upper temperature limits of the bag?

As it gets warmer, you'll probably want to open the bag up and drape it over yourself as a quilt. Can you do that with the elastic bags? I've never used one so I don't know if this would be an issue or not.

I am more concerned if either bag has an occurrence of down migration and redistribution so one doesn't have any excessive cold spots

The MB elastic keeps the bag close to your body creating less volume that your body needs to heat. It does seem to work, I own 3 of the UL SS bags.
