It's nice to see someone else out here that is years away. I'm planning on 2018 when I plan on retiring. At least for 6 months while I hike the AT. Just joined the forum to start learning.

I was planning on 2014, but I am just starting a new job that I had been trying to land for awhile. I will probably have to wait before asking for a leave of absence!! I will plan for 2916, that will give me time to really try out my own dehydrated foods and ultra lite gear. I'm an older woman, so the less weight on my back the better. I'm super excited about this hike!! Until I get on the AT I
Will be hiking a lot in the Sawtooth mountains in Idaho.

Just tell your boss and/or wife that you ARE going on the Trail in 2016, so they can just shut their pie-holes. Guaranteed that you will be fired and divorced with the added bonus of losing everything, so you don't have to be worried about a lot of gear, as your ex- will have taken everything.

Just kiddin' - I'm in for 29 Feb 2016 - try #2. Gear getting bought and gear weight is coming down - bills getting paid - wife coming to grips with the 2nd attempt - boss already notified and agreed to it.

Keep in touch everyone.

Either 2016 or 2017. I just started grad school again, but I *should* be done in three years instead of the four I thought I would be in for. It may mean a later start in 2016 or holding off until 2017.

I assume you mean 2016? If so, that is my goal as well. My son is graduating high school in 2015 and it is my plan to hit the trail the year after. So I do not consider myself "older" but I guess I am not really a spring chicken either. Please email me if you are interested in keeping in touch to prepare to start around the same time. It's 2016 for me as well, since this year is out of the question and next year is the JMT. Leaning towards SOBO but might have to do NOBO because of starting/ending date convenience.

Wow, I at first thought that stating to plan this far out would be seen as strange. I guess if it is, I at least have company. I will be retired. In my case my wife is very supportive though when I asked her if she wanted to hike it with me, she asked me how far. I said 2000 miles and change to which she replied " You're crazy, I don't even want to drive that far". In any case, I am aiming at March 2016 start, give or take a couple of weeks depending. I will start slow, partly because I am no spring chicken and partly because I know myself, if I don't pound that into my head I will start trying to go too fast, get hurt, and start planning all over again.

I am planning a 2016 northbound thruhike. I promised the wife I wouldn't go solo, so would love to connect now with anyone interested in coordinating/hiking together. Doesn't literally need to be side by side, but something that puts worried wives minds at ease. PM me if interested!

I'll be hitting the trail sometime early March in 2016. I graduate in December which gives me a couple months to prepare mentally. I can't wait, it's all I think about. All I'm doing from now until then is learning as much as I can about the trail.

I am planning a NOBO 2016 thru-hike and like you I am just waiting for a contract to end with the USN. I get out early FEB and plan to start my hike at the end of FEB. Have to finish before hopefully starting college in the fall!

I'm planning to leave late March 2016, finishing university is first on the list, and then working at my current student-job for a few months to get the necessary funds. Flights to the states are so expensive, it just adds another month.

Killer,

I am also going to hit the Trail in 2016, at least that is the plane as long as the Corps retiers me that is. I am hiking with my service dog and would look forward to hiking with some brothers from the Corps. Hit me up and maybe we can meet up on the trail.

Ticks, probably the one thing I am most concerned about. Small, hard to see if in an out of the way area, and can have serious affects.

Any '16ers have their blogs up and running yet? I'd love to read about people preparing for the trail and doing shakedown hikes. I've got mine set up on Wordpress and a few posts done.

Looking forward to seeing you all out on the trail, the current plan is to leave last week of March / First week of April.

My blog is up, but all that's contained there right now are AT Book reviews (as well as other book reviews) as I'm still in Afghanistan and haven't told my family about my intentions to hike yet. Content will pick up as I get home and move closer to my start date. The Url is : www.going-big.com (http://www.going-big.com)
