Today the Post Office said they will stop Sat. delivery starting in Aug. How will this affect those who use the Post Ofice for their mail drops?

Maybe not at all. Many of the very small post offices had limited hours anyway.

you will not be able to pick up on sat or sunday, people will just work around it... just like they do some of the reduced hour PO out there along the at

They said they will still do packages on Saturday, just not letters and bulk.

A. It won't affect what ever Saturday hours post offices have. It will affect carrier delivery to homes and businesses .

B. It is claimed it won't affect package delivery, because that is where the money is.

Mail such as letters and magazines would be affected. Delivery of packages of all sizes would continue six days a week.

I wonder if the price of a first class stamp will go up again at that time.

No Saturday delivery beginning August. Sounds like post office hours won't be reduced further for the moment. I suppose as long as my drop boxes arrive before Saturday I will still be able to pick them up on Saturday.

It seems that package delivery isn't affected. The USPS press release is a bit vague though. http://about.usps.com/news/national-releases/2013/pr13_019.htm

I'm not sure what the difference is between "mail" and a "package". In my head if I "mail" a "package". :)

No impact to hikers.

I do get some first class mail packages at home that are probably technically bulky letters. I can wait over the weekend if it means my real packages I send as a hiker aren't affected.

It will indeed be interesting if you send a mail drop to a hostel or outfitter and expect a Saturday delivery.

Need to plan ahead, folks! Both in mailing your drop and when you pick it up if it's a PO.

This. And even letters sent to post offices are able to be picked up on Saturday. It is simply the daily mail carrier coming to the house to drop off envelopes that will stop.

This happened once before a long time ago, then the powers that be bailed the service with an influx of tax dollars. No impact on hikers.

That bail was before ww2

If you think about it, $.46 to send a letter door-to-door, across town, or cross country is a serious bargain.

Not if I factor in the tax burden to keep the USPS afloat. :)

No tax dollars have gone to the USPS.

No tax dollars have gone to the USPS.

OK, I understand your point.

Let's see, the USPS only lost $15.9 billion in the last fiscal year, and borrows to offset the loss. We will either pay for that in taxes or in inflation, unless of course the USPS can become competitive and operate profitably to pay it off. I'm not holding my breath.

And technically you are incorrect, as the "Postal Service Fund" is appropriated by Congress for the USPS, but that is small potatoes (around $80 million last year).

They were forced to fully fund a pension plan in a short amount of time.

In 2006 Congress passed a law that required the PO to prefund future retireree health care premiums for 75 years. Something no other company or agency has had to do. They have to do this in 10 years and requires a $5.5 billion payment every year. They showed a profit in 2005. I agree with Sly, to send a letter across the country for 46 cents is a bargain. I just mailed a package to CA for $5.15, got there in 3 days. To me this is amazing.

Won't be a problem for folks, USPS still there Monday thru Friday. Good enough for most anything.

I doubt that they would deliver a package on a Saturday to a hiker on the trail. Probably to a home address, like UPS and FedEx. If they would open the PO on a Saturday to get a hiker's package, why bother closing it in the first place?
