just got of the phone with my nephew who was just in The Smoky Mtn area and said there were reports on 441 being washed out, along with bridges and smaller roads damaged, washed out.

can anyone add to this report?

Looking to see if my early spring hike needs to be altered.

From the GSMNP website (http://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisit/temproadclose.htm):

Newfound Gap Road (US-441) between Gatlinburg, TN and Cherokee, NC is closed to through traffic due to a landslide at Mile Marker 22 on the North Carolina side of the park. Access to Newfound Gap from the Gatlinburg Entrance is currently open to all vehicles. Please watch for snow and ice on the road. Access to Smokemont campground is permitted from the Cherokee entrance in North Carolina. Thanks for bringing this up. The map tells me that, yes, indeedy, I can go into Gatlinburg when I reach Newfound Gap on Earth Day. It was sad to think that I'd be so close to Calhouns and its chicken salad but might be unable to get there. Of course, this scratches a visit to Cherokee, but that can wait until another year or however long it will take the NPS to get the road fully operable again.

Local news www.wlos.com reported today that the park was hoping for a mid-May reopening.
