In its June 2005 edition, The PCT Communicator announces the results of the first human trial of the snakebite treatment called The Sawyer Extractor (that big yellow syringe with suction cups). The Extractor's manufacturer claims that the device can remove up to 33 percent of injected venom if it is applied properly and immediately after a bite. The Annals of Emergency Medicine (October 2004), however, only reports test results closer to .04 percent! Best case scenario, the results might climb to 2 percent, a far cry from the advertised rate of success. In light of such underwhelming results, the article's author, Dr. Duffy Ballard, characterizes The Extractor as "an unnecessary four ounce addition to a hiker's first-aid kit".

Until a better field treatment comes along, watch your step!

What is the alternative? Does Duffy offer one, other than 'watch your step' which is too late once bitten?

The only effective post-bite treatment that Dr. Ballard offers is a cell phone and helicopter ride!

The chances of being bitten by a snake are slim to none, unless you are stupid enough to harase the snake. So, let's not hype the extractor.

Teaching new scouts first aid for snake bites is pretty simple - try to identify the snake (without endangering yourself), keep the bite location as low as possible, and get the heck to a hospital (if it is poisonous, if there are even poisonous snakes in the particular area).

Oops sorry, forgot a step...you better hope the hospital you arrive at has the proper antivenom for your particular bite, if you even know what kind of snake it was!
