tired of crappy Ohio winters thinking of a move south. how are the winters in damacus? I've tried to look up historical weather for the area but come up with little...how much snow fall? temp lows? i go to trail days and the weather at that time is usually pleasant what's mid winter like?

we have days in the 20's and days in the 50-60's, it normally stays in the 30-40's. lows vary from 10's-30's. we dont get a ton of snow, but when it does snow its normally a heavy dense snow or ice.

here is the observed weather for damascus in january: http://www.weather.com/weather/monthly/USVA0204?month=-1
here it is for grayson highlands state park: http://www.weather.com/weather/monthly/GRAYSONHIV:13?month=-1
Abingdon, VA: http://www.weather.com/weather/monthly/USVA0001?month=-1

the winters are actually quite nice, i trail run and can run almost all winter outside, only a few days a year keep me inside, youre at the bottom of the snow range, any farther south only the really mountainous areas(smokey's, etc) get snow, everything else, a dusting maybe.

today will be in the mid 40's-50's.

if you dont want to live right in damascus, check out the Abingdon area

I live in Cherokee County, NC. This is a mountainous county, but I live in the valley at about 2000 feet. We get snow in the winter - more than a dusting. The mountains on our northern border can catch a wallop of snow at times. The snow usually melts away in a day or two. In January of 2011, we got 10" and it stuck around on the ground for about two weeks. We can get some bad cold snaps. Winter days are usually 40 - 50 degrees. Nights typically around freezing or below. Teens and lower can be experienced some winter nights. I grew up up north in the NY/NJ area. Winters down here are paradise compared to up there, especially these last few days. Guess it's all relative. :)

we'll have single digit temps and lots of snow at times. the town sits at 1900 feet. this winter has been fairly mild. nothing too extreme. lots of places for sale/rent in and around town

I'm also considering the Damascus area. Nearby Tennessee I'm also considering. I want a small farm near the trail.
