Anyone done an A.T. thruhike starting at Mt. Oglethorpe? Was it a worthwhile addition? Just curious as one day I hope to thru myself and this sounded like an interesting idea.
Most folks would then quit at Springer, rather than Neel Gap.

:banana:banana.........
Is there a public trail that connects?
No... private land with no trail access between Oglethrope and Springer I've heard from several sources.
This comes up not infrequently... http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?68967-Mount-Oglethorpe-to-Springer-Mtn&highlight=oglethorpe

The reason why it was moved was because of nearby hog farms.
Just do from Springer or from Amicalola Falls...why add road walks, bushwhacking, and having to ask permission to cross private lands.
Road walk (or perhaps bike ride) in 2013:

That's assuming you get permission to get on the actual summit. Otherwise bike/walk from the gate on monument rd to the hwy and ultimately to the state park.
Based on this thread, looks like the owner was nice enough to give permission:

What's a hog harm? :D

I don't know about in the States, but in Scotland it's a serious matter.

What a shame that there is no longer public access. I was mostly intrigued by the nostalgia of it. I wonder how many changes would have to be made along the way to perfectly retrace earl's original route.

Monument road is public and looks to be along a ridge. Probably not a bad road walk...but looks to be an even nicer bike ride. If you write the gentleman listed in the summit post link, probably can even go to the summit if you so wish.
Personally, I think it would be cool to see the summit, but I would not go out of my way to see it.
Mt Oglethorpe is now accessible to the public as a park, thanks to the generosity of Mr. Ken Rice and his late wife Billie. Access it via 136 eastbound from Jasper, take a right on Monument Road. The park is at the end of Monument Road.
