Could someone please let me know what kind of thread I need for silnylon? Thanks.

Brian of MacCat Tarps uses "Urethane coated 100% polyester thread" which sounds like a good choice to me but I have no idea where to find such thread. This is from the page: http://www.outdoorequipmentsupplier.com/maccattarps.htm

I used a poly thread to make my sylnylon tarp and poncho, any fabric store should have it. The brand I used was Gutermann.
And here's a link to a place that sells a product called "Hydrophobe" poly thread, but it comes in 6000 yard cones. http://www.thru-hiker.com/MaterialDetail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=MG125&subcat=Roll+Goods I imagine you would still have to seam seal with this stuff.

Stupe - That is the thread I use for my tarps (the Tex 40 for silnylon). It is a great all around thread: No fuzz, cheap, no tough color choices, etc. I have it listed as "urethane coated" becuase I was playing around with different ways to coat the thread to make it more water resistant, but I dont think they were doing anything more than the "hydrophobe" finish TH's thread has.

I liked your page. The shape of the tarp is great, I hope you don't mind me copying a little on my next project....don't worry, I'm strictly amatuer. I see you're from the West Point area, I go up around there multiple times each year, as I'm from NYC. The Hudson Valley is beautiful.

I have sewed much of my gear and have made numerous stuff sacks in all sizes for my husband and me (and others!) to use. I have always used the Guterman thread that I bought from Outdoor Wilderness Fabrics. They are really good, have lots of fabrics, and all the types of hardware and cording you could ever need if you are making your own gear. They will send you samples of all their fabric and cording for a very reasonable price and it is handy for future reference. http://www.owfinc.com/Hardware/Shardware/thread.asp

As a quilter, I have also found this thread in quilt shops but you need to call around. Just ask for Guterman 100% polyester....they will know what you mean! Do not buy the cotton or cotton covered polyester. You definitely need the 100% polyester as it is more compatible with sil. I use a very small needle size on my sewing machine...either a 9 or 11 to minimize the holes. I also seam seal all the seams. This is easy to do if you are sealing a tent and just seal all the bags you make at once. We have used these stuff sacks over and over and use one in particular for all our bear bag hanging and it has been very durable.

oops...forgot to mention that the other company that I have used for sil and hardware...they also have thread is http://www.questoutfitters.com. They have a very good online catalog but they do not have a secure ordering site so once you know what you want, you have to call them, but I have not had any problem with this. They are really nice to deal with.
