I am a current student at Penn State Abington which is outside Philadelphia but will be moving to state college next year. I was wondering if anyone knew of some good backpacking trials near school I could possibly go to for a weekend hike.

Mid State Trail http://www.hike-mst.org is PA's longest footpath, together with Standing Stone Trail nearby http://www.hike-sst.org is part of Great Eastern Trail http://www.greateasterntrail.net and sample the Tiltrock Country aka Ridge and Valley physiographic province for many miles (or kilometers in the case of MST, it's founder was a Penn State physics professor who metricated the trail in 1973).

North and west of SC Allegheny Front Trail http://alleghenyfronttrail.info is the nearest of the several weekend or longer loops in the Allegheny Plateau - others are Chuck Keiper Trail http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/recreation/hiking/stateforesttrails/chuckkeipertrail/index.htm and Quehanna Trail http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/recreation/hiking/stateforesttrails/quehannatrail/index.htm

I believe all of these are discussed in threads here on WB.

A good local outfitter is Appalachian Outdoors downtown on Allen http://www.appoutdoors.com

Allegheny National Forest (or is it a state forest???) is nearby and quite vast with a substantial elk herd too.
But, sorry, I haven't hiked there.
I have hiked the Loyalsock trail at World's End State Park although that is probably a 1 1/2-2 hour drive from State College.
Nice trail, Beware of porcupines (they can climb trees too)
Have fun.

Not too far north of State College are the Black Forest and Susquehannock trails - both loops of 42 and 87 miles respectively. As KiOeh said, these trails are discussed at length if you go to the "Other Trails" forum here on WB and use the "Search" feature.

It's a National Forest whereas over the border in New York is Allegheny State Park.

Schuyckill River Trail goes from Philly past Port Clinton. It crosses the AT just south of Port Clinton. It is a work in progress and not complete.
