I've been on this site for months and have read almost every book I can find on the AT. For the first time EVER I glanced at a post talking about permits needed in a few areas like the Smokies? Where on the AT do we need permits?

Thanks!

The national parks. GSMNP and SNP. SNP is still free and self register when you get there. The smokies you now have get and pay for a permit before you get there.

Starting this year ( Feb-13) you have to pay to go through the GSMNP 5 dollars a night, you have to go on-line to do a reservation and pay, then SNP you have to get a self registration theirs a kiosk, then BSP you have to register with a ranger upon arrival if your a thru-hiker and staying at the Birches you don't have to pay anything, but if you plan to stay elsewhere in the BSP you have to pay per-night.

Please note that the location where the Appalachian Trail enters the Smokies from the South is not manned by park employees and the only good way to get your permit printed is from home or one of the trail towns South of the park.
