I have a Marmot Helium and Thermarest Prolite pad. The pad is only 17 ounces with stuff sack and I can sleep well on it. I like the fact that it is only an inch off the ground so my arms aren't dropping off several inches. I also like the fact that the material isn't as fragile looking as the Neo Air and I'm not so worried about puncturing it... However, I'm somewhat worried that the 2.1 R Value for the pad will be inadequate on the JMT in September. I'm planning to finish at Whitney Portal on September 15 or 16. Any suggestions on sleeping setup?

You're fine with that. I hiked the JMT the same time last year and was never cold at night. Obviously your conditions may vary.
