The thread about doing the Smokies in mid March got me thinking-am I likely to run into a crowd of spring breakers in Md. at that time? I probably will still go in March, though, maybe just plan to get to the campsites earlier in the day or stay away from shelters. Anyone else planning to be out there?

I've hiked over Spring Break and over Thanksgiving week twice (both typically college breaks) and I've yet to see a sizeable group of people out for any extended period on the trail. Mostly, I see them on the weekends, sometimes for a long weekend but certainly not for the whole trip. And I have met 4 or 5 who were out for the whole week. You should be fine in MD. I was in mid/southern VA for my holiday hikes. Even being near Virginia Tech we only saw kids out on the weekends. Hope that helps.

I'm planning to do the MD section 3/19 - 3/21 but I'll be a single and won't be using shelters unless it's down pouring. When were you planning on headed out? Perhaps out paths will cross.

I'm not sure of my dates yet for work/family reasons; I'll post as soon as I do know. It could be during that time frame you mention.
