with thru-hikers and section hikers considering plans for 2013 hikes, think of the options of slackpacking available around the trailtown of pearisburg, va.. 1) from woodshole to pearisburg [10 miles], 2) from pearisburg to the 'captains' [20 miles], or 3) from woodshole to the captains [30 miles]. slackpacking affords hikers the advantages of covering more distances with less effort, at a faster rate. water can be a problem with the hike from p'burg to the 'captains'. with less physical effort you reduce your rate of dehydration, and with less weight carrying more water is not as cumbersome. also, because you can fit more packs than people in a vehicle--expense can be minimalized. the 'captains' and woodshole are two great places to lay up. food for thought don,540-921-7433(RIDE)
