Ten years ago my father and I hiked the Georgia section of the AT. I remember a wonderful campsite but do not seem to remember where it is. I think that it is located just north of Neel's Gap. It is on the right side of the trail if heading north and offers great views. I also remember that only a few hundred yards or so down the trail from this site was rocky bald also with great views.

Could it be Hogpen Gap? I know it has some good camp sites and great views. If memory serves me correctly it's about 6 miles north of Neels Gap and a popular place to stop for the night.

Could be, hard to find good pictures of Hogpen Gap but a few look familiar. If it helps I also remember that a road was visible from the rocky bald.

Wolf Laurel Top is the nice spot with a view. In 2011 bears took 4 of the food bags that were hung in the trees. I was one of the lucky ones they did not get. Beautiful spot.

I imagine it is a popular place on the trail. What would be my chances of finding the spot empty on a weekday in June? Also are bears usually a problem there or just an unlucky day?

sounds like Big Cedar Mountain. About a mile north of Woody Gap and 10 miles south of Neels Gap

Most of the thru hikers will be gone. If I wanted the answer to your question I would call Leigh at the Hiker Hostel and ask her. 770-312-7342

Cowrock Mtn 4.7 miles N of Neels or 0.8 miles S of Tesnatee. Similar view on the blue blaze to HogPen Gap. Don't recall offhand if you can see a road from either.

Meant to say Whitley Gap Shelter.

Is it near the cheese factory area? I think I remember a place just north of it.

+ 1 on Wolf Laurel Top! Beautiful views! I was there in 2011 & saw no bears at all!

From pictures it seems like the campsite is wolf laurel top and the rocky bald is cow rock.

I agree, although Cowrock is over a mile, but otherwise it fits the description of the rocky outcropping. Similar site north of the Cheese Factory site with Tray Mt following, but its a good bit further than just up from Neels Gap.

Sounds like Wolf Laurel Top to me also. Do a google image search and you will see some photos of both the grassy camp site and the view. I had a visit from a bear there last October. I'd say 50:50 being empty on a June weekday. Highlly likely to be occupied on a wee-end by overnighters if the weather is good.
