What is a good pack weight before food and water? My big 4 come out to a little under 11 pounds. Is 20 too much?

It varies person to person. I don't carry more than 15 pounds

Will vary by personal preferences (tent vs tarp, quilt vs bag, type of stove, etc...), kind of hike, time of year, many more things. My 4 day summer pack and gear weighs 13 pounds. My planned thru hike pack will start out at 18 pounds. Some people will be as low as 8 and as high as 45, or more!

20 pounds for a base weight is not bad, really. Add 3 days of food and 2 liters of water and you're at 30 total weight. Very doable. Not ultralight, but way lighter than average.

I stated at Springer in 2010 at 20 lbs + f/w. I got it down to 13-15 lbs. depending on weather. I bet it cost me $1,200 bucks to lose the 4-6 lbs. but very worth it.

To be able to move faster, safer, and with the same amount of gear but significantly lighter was well worth the extra cost
