Hello!

I am thinking of taking the 10 year old twins for their first AT trip. I couldn't find any posts about the condition of the road leading to it (I've been reading there is more than one route--will be coming from Atlanta if that helps)

I have access to a small truck, but it would be an extra hour to pick-up/drop off. Do you think a sedan could make it OK? (thinking of all the recent big rains etc.)

Thanks!

Eddie O.

check out the ATC interactive map for the service road route up to Springer from the east. A delorme map may also shed some light. others can give you more detailed info. a sedan can make it up the FR route from the east.

I can answer my own question!!

The route coming from Ellijay to Springer via Big Bend road and then Forest Service 42 was very doable in a sedan type car.

There was a decent amount of snow and still had no problems.

For my Android phone, I used this mark for Big Bend Road:

Big Bend Road (https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=218109182311311515579.0004a9b2323f130ae5a3 5&msa=0&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=35.092945,-86.143799&spn=4.637806,10.821533&t=m&z=7&vpsrc=1&iwloc=0004d6e880653f127df18)

and then used this mark for the

the Springer Parking lot
(https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=218109182311311515579.0004a9b2323f130ae5a3 5&msa=0&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=35.092945,-86.143799&spn=4.637806,10.821533&t=m&z=7&vpsrc=1&iwloc=0004d68de76ef13c4edcf)
It was a lot of fun with the 10 year old twins who loved playing in the snow. I felt for the thru-hikers who were in shorts in 20 F snowy weather.
