i went kayaking and camped out on an island at percey priest lake yesterday
i found a great stealth campsite,perfect for kayaking and hammock hanging
the offical campsites suck because they are trashed out by boaters,i love this place,pondarosa island on j.percy priest lake near nashville tn:cool: neo
next weekend,i am taking my wife island hopping and hammock hanging:cool: neo

I've had so many boats over the years that I've learned how to take care of them and baby them enough that I decided to go with the kevlar/carbon.
I ordered it in December to replace an old Current Designs boat. It should be here in the next two weeks. I'm pretty excited. Now I've got three sea kayaks, and I live 350 miles from the ocean.

I did some island hopping with my hammock last summer. I live in Vancouver and so ferried aroud to some of the Gulf Island (Mayne, Pender and Saturna) and walked and camped on beaches, etc. Good times. It would have been next to impossible to find a nice, flat spot for a tent but it was good to go with the hammock.

Might be slightly off-topic for this forum, but since this thread is here, anyone know of any good islands that you can camp on in the Potomac?
There's a couple really small wooded islands downstream of Mather Gorge in an area frequented by whitewater kayakers. These would be great for stealth camping, I'm concerned that there's too much traffic in this area and being discovered by a ranger. Plus the Park Police helicopter makes regular runs down this section of river. So I guess I'm looking for an island where it's either legal to camp or there's only a slim chance of being caught.
Oh, and here's a pic of my kayak on one of the aformentioned islands:

I've enjoyed using my HH on local sea islands and river bluffs near my home. this coming weekend I'm looking forward to a 3 niter on my favorite. Haven't had to worry about bear bagging, but do raccoon bag! Hammocking really gives the freedom to LNT and seek nontraditional sites away from the crowds. It's always fun to see the doubletake when I coast past a party site from out of nowhere.:D

I don't know if this is true, but I was told that an island is public property. You can camp on them without getting into trouble. This maybe a little more true where I live and the banks on the rivers a mainly private property.
I did a couple overnights in my canoe on the local river and try to stay on an island when I can.

there are 3 legal campsites on this island,but they are trashed out by boat people,i stealth camp to avoid trash:cool: neo
As far as stealth, I have had rangers walk right by my hammock.. in an car campground and ask me if I was going to camp at the site. They just don't think a hammock is a "camp" . Its a portable chair to them.
THe kayak hammock camping is a secret that people don't know about, yet.
I have even seen some hammocks decked on kayak masts , hanging between the masts.
Oh, the above islands in Mather Gorge is in the Great Falls area. One of the most crowded places you have ever seen. The ratio of police and rangers to Kayakers is one of the highest anywhere. I am from the area and used to lead hikes around there. You would really have to hide, I am sure the authorities would frown on it. There are hikers that go everywhere orienteering, and even kayak /hiking just to find little out of the way places there.
There are legal designated sites all along the C&O canal , I am sure they have a website with those locations if you want a legal crashpad. take your bugnet.
