Rangeley to Monson in September for me. If my daughter, Sunshine, joins me, then I'll probably shorten the distance a bit. What I'd really like to do is to take 3 solid weeks and finish atop Katahdin on a Class 1 day, 40 years after my first AT section hike!

Hey Jeremy,

Heading north from Bear Mountain Zoo for about 18 days. Will be starting to hike June 1st, I believe. Plan to make it to somewhere in Mass..

Possibly do another trip in Oct. continuing north from where I end up in June. Fall is a nice time for Vermont.

Have fun on your section, let us know how it goes.

We live close enough that almost half the trail is within range for a 3-4 day weekend. Don't know if we'll succeed or not, but we might someday complete the whole trail. To keep that within the range of possibility, we are trying to do two trips up north each year, and use the southern half to keep in shape.

With that in mind, we have scheduled one section hike per month (except July/August). We like to skip around: we just did a piece south of Damascus; next one is Hot Springs to Davenport; after that we'll take a whole week to mark off a chunk of Pennsylvania; Neels Gap to Dicks Creek after the thru-hikers are gone, NOBO from Grayson Highlands in June. In the fall we're doing two or three small pieces of Virginia, and hopefully half of Vermont.

If we don't kill ourselves before the end of the year, we'll have added 350 miles to our total.

Maryland.

There are rocks after Pogo campsite. Then from High Rock, MD toward Pen Mar there's a 1/2 to 3/4 mile of rocks that some describe as '2 miles long' .... I'm old and slow and it took me 2 hours.

See the blog for some photos.

From an 'as yet to be released' post on my blog: It's frustrating to be hiking along at a good clip, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine, only to find that the 'Trail planners' have decided to take you off the old logging road Trail and send the Trail up a steep incline to the rocky ridge line in order to create a Trail through a maze of boulders the size of 'smart cars' and 'baby elephants' through which you must attempt to locate the next white blaze and then after a quarter mile, descend on a jumble of boulders and rocks back down to that same old logging road Trail until the 'Trail planners' decide to repeat the process.

JMT...oh wait, shouldn't that be under thru hikes?

Ok, all joking aside I'm forgoing my normal long AT hike this year to do the JMT. So probably won't get much done on the AT as I'm burning all my vacation on the JMT trip. I did get Petite's Gap to Hog Camp Gap in VA in a couple of weeks ago. Finished at Hog Camp Gap, and Fresh Grounds was there with the Leap Frog Cafe set up. Cool guy and great food.

As for the rest of the year I might get one or two more shorties in, likely here in VA.

Long time reader first time poster. Ok I am planning my first section hike in my goal to finish the trail in the next ten or so years. I am planning on hiking were I have before so I am on somewhat familiar ground. That being said its been 15 years since I did any serious hiking, but I think have a new twist here that I haven't read.
First off I am planning to start at the NY boarder near green pond lake in New Jersey and head SOBO to High Point and down to the Delaware water gap. I hope to do this in 5 days but I do have mapped out points along the way if i can't and family in the area that can pick me up anywhere though this whole hike. (this is why i am doing my first shakeout in this section). Now here's the twist. I have gathered my hiking equipment list based on the hundred or so others that have posted theirs here and read over and over all your comments bad and good.
I sent that list to friends and family and have attained all on the list. So I will be hiking with ALL BORROWED GEAR. The only thing I DO know is the pack. I used it long ago and my father has used it since so I know it fits and the belts will fit since he is "larger" than I but the same height. Yes the metal bars are on the outside of the pack. I picked the end of August beginning of September as my hike time so the weather isn't to cold or hot. I went thru the farmers almanac and confirmed that weather for the last 10 years on that. I recently hiked a 10 mile out and back on a streanous / moderate trail in the smokies with no issue in the boots I am going to hike with so I think I'm set. Time will tell if my old camping, hiking and boy scouting comes right back to me. So back on the trail I go.

The wife and I are doing something different this year for our summer hike. Instead of continuing north on the AT we'll be hiking on the Great Allegheny Passage. We'll be doing the 90 southern, or is it eastern, miles from Connellsville, PA to Cumberland, Md. And, yes, we know it's a rail trail.
