What books are you currently reading and plan on taking with you for upcoming hikes ? Also, is the literate hiker now using an e-reader such as Kindle or Nook in lieu of the paperback verson ?

I dusted off a book the other day that needs reading ,but no way will I pack the Barefoot Sisters " Walking Home", so instead it will be my home read.

I've seen quite a few kindles on the trail the last few years and the presominant books have been the Game of Thrones series. Personally I'm in the middle of Guns, Germs and Steel...

I figure about 100 nights of 1/2-1 hour reading, plus some daytime stuff I might get through a couple / few of those (on a Kindle app. on a droid).

'Walking Home' of course is the follow up book to 'Southbound', but at nearly 500 pgs. (6"x9" in dimension), is best suited for the more modern e-readers.

I never bring a book for recreational reading. Only a trail guidebook--maybe a SMALL Bible or New Testament--because I am a Christian/Pastor.

I've recently read: Following Atticus (which started it all), A Walk in the Woods, Day Hikes on the AT (Logue), Overnight Hikes on the AT (Logue), Hiking and Backpacking (Berger), The AT Backpacker (Logue), The Boy Scout Handbook, Just Passin' Through, Hiking Through, Walking the Appalachian Trail, The AT Companion 2012, Exploring the AT: Mid Atlantic States, Exploring the AT:Southern New England, Exploring the AT: Northern New England.......something of a theme here.

As far as what we plan to bring (other than guides)- one book for Snacktime: Fire Star by Chris D'Lacey (the semester's assigned reading)

Currently working on To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth by Jeff Cooper. Also have Practical Shooting by Brian Enos, all of HP Lovecrafts' stuff, and the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.

Not that I expect to finish all of those, but I tend to read 3-4 books at a time.

I am bringing my iPhone & a charger, a New Trent 15,000 mah battery source which weighs 9.9 oz.

An iPhone 4s needs 1432 mah for a full battery. This means that New Trent battery source can charge an iPhone 10.5 times, essentially 10 full days worth of the iPhone. And, lol, I bought this New Trent on a special Amazon deal around Xmas for $15 (its normally $75!!).

My Kindle Keyboard weighs 8 oz, not multifunctional tho, it does one thing - books which I have the same books, in the iPhone anyway.

Since my iPhone is a phone, camera, reader, audiobooks, maps, GPS, entertainment etc its multifunctional.

The New Trent battery source is also multifunctional: it will charge the iphone, plus my double or triple A Sanyo Eneloop batteries (for my headlight).

For me, hands down, this is the efficient combination.
