Next, the lost coast is right on the divide line between Humboldt and Mendecino Counties. The former, the north part, is much easier than the southern in terms of elevation loss. it pretty muchs hugs the coast, following an old roadbed for a while. But there you have to watch the tides, as some parts will only be passable with a favorable (low) tide. So you need to get the tide charts for that area, and time your hike accordingly. That may prevent a multi-hour delay, although those can be pretty fun if you are loose.

The second part, the Sinkyone Wilderness, is just as difficult as Southern Maine on the AT. Do not underestimate the steepness and ruggedness of this section. It is breathtakingly beautiful around every corner, so go slow and enjoy every step.

Thanks for the advice, all. I read your journal Wookie. It was useful and I'll send you other questions later. You actually walked right past my apartment in Long Beach. If I'd known, I'd have hooked you up with some sweet trail magic...filled you up at Roscoe's Chicken n Waffles, let you use the laundry, and even spared you the night in Wilmington at the no tell motel.

Jester, as an old friend and part of one of the great years of my life, I know you would not steer me wrong. I'll be sure to make that stop up in Eureka (we're going to be visiting other parks in CA (Redwoods, Lassen) before heading down through the Sierras.
