I am a sailor and bought this smock to keep me dry on warmer days. It is very small and light and cant be more than 5 ounces. I was wondering if this would be adequete for doing a thru of the AT or backpacking in general. I plan on bringing a large hat with a wide brim so the lack of the hood shouldnt be too much of a problem. I like it because it is breathable and all of the edges are elastic. I am looking for lightweight rain pants and especially the GoLite Reeds any experience with these or recomendations. Thanks

I see two problems with the smock. First, the tight neck will inhibit breathability, and really isn't needed on the AT. Second and more important, the fabric will eventually "wet through" given a hard enough and long enough rain. So, this should work to keep you dry in light rain and by keeping the wind off will keep you warm in colder rain, but you will get wet eventually. Then again, with truly waterproof garments (with the possible exception of eVENT and perhaps a highly vented The Packa) you'll end up getting soaked in your own sweat given enough aerobic activity.
