I'd say the trek of Bart and Joanna deserves its own thread by now. They are keeping up a great journal on their own blog site http://www.gethiking.net/

Check out both the video and the text stories (different content) on http://www.wkyt.com/wymt/home/headlines/Hikers-travel-the-Great-Eastern-Trail-195798361.html

(The text added an extra zero to its length)

Deep into West Virginia, the hardest section logistically, made easier by our connections to the area. A highly geeky picture made it on the front page of the Charleston Gazette recently. The online version is at: http://www.wvgazette.com/Outdoors/201303280195 (http://www.wvgazette.com/Outdoors/201303280195) We're darn near halfway. The outpouring of love and support has been overwhelming. Life is good. :)

The progress across southern WVa seems more like Julius Caesar returning from Gaul than the average thru-hike. Glad you're enjoying it.

Looks like they're making good time. Already on the Tuscarora Trail and looks like they'll be in the Sleepy Creek area this week.

Finally something novel in the hiking community, on a par with Earl Shaffer in '48, but there sure is quite an echo in this here forum discussing it.

They've already done all the not-really-existent parts of the GET, with all functional trail (mostly the PA rocks) to go. Looks very good to make history this year.

On the east route GET at Hancock, probably in PA before one even had a chance to post. :D

Gotta like their description of the trail in SGL 124. I suspect I would find it a lot less pleasant in the heat than the times I've been up there in spring or autumn.

That area is one of the rockiest - how do you think it stacks up vs. Cove or Stone Mts on SST?

AegisIII

I would say a bit rockier than Cove Mtn, slightly less so than Stone Mtn (the southern half, as I've still not gotten to the part north of the Pole Trail).

Seems like they've discovered the Throne Room, would have been a beautiful day to be up there.

An opportunity to meet them this Saturday:

You can hear more of Houck and Swanson's tales from the Great Eastern Trail at their presentation on National Trails Day (culmination of PA Hiking Week too), June 1st, 1:30 pm at the Woolrich Outlet Store, 39 Boardman Dr. Woolrich, PA 17779

I heard you told them about the secret shelter on MST Hmmm! I would never divulge such a secret :D. (I imagine they found better information from the MST maintainer folks then met when they hopped over to the Midstate via the Greenwood Spur.)

They did it!

The GET was recently thru-hiked for the first time by Jo Swanson and Bart Houck. Congratulations to them on their historic accomplishment. Hopefully more will follow. This trail run west of the AT, from Alabama to New York.

Is Jo the first female to be the first thru-hiker of any of America's long trails?
