View Full Version : Where do you check for the temperature?

I'll be at Springer on Wednesday, so I check places like Suches, Dahleonega and Amicalola Falls Park on Weather.com. They are somewhat helpful, but I'm wondering if there are places to check what the temps are like up on the mountains, say like Springer or is it only a few degrees colder? Let me know waht you use

Thanks

Also check under ODDS & ENDS on the White Blaze Menu bar, then click on weather.

But since there aren't any actual weather monitoring stations at the summits or along the ridges (with a few exceptions) any data you get is just a guess.

For current conditions WB member FatMan has a weather station at Grassy Gap, which is about 2.5 mile S of Woody Gap and a couple hundred yards off the AT:

Since this site only gives current and historical data, for predictions I use Suches at other websites as it is just a few miles from Woody Gap and is the city with the highest elevation in GA.

I believe I was told as a rule of thumb you could subtract 3 to 5 degrees for every 1000 ft of elevation when receiving temperature reports from towns located at the base of the mountains.

You can always check weather nearby the location you want specific weather for, noting that elevation, and adjusting any increase/decrease in elevation, about 3* colder for every 1000 ft in additional elev.

It doesn't really matter if you're starting a thru hike. You can get 3 seasons of weather in March & April.Whatever it is will change every few days. There's about a foot of snow on the trail above 3000ft starting 20 miles north of Hot Springs.Just got back from checking Jerry's Cabin shelter....

The only thing I'd add to the general factor that elevation reduces 3 to 5 degrees per 1,000' is that windspeeds forecast for lower elevations can vary greatly as elevations increase. I'm not aware of any averages for windspeed variation of the nature of the raw temperature changes. I just know from experience that once you get towards 3,000-3,500' of elevation, you'll normally see stronger winds than down at the 2,000' elevation. Winds at 4,000' and above can easily be double or more than double winds at lower elevation. Lastly, where your shelter or tent site is located topographically speaking can make a big difference in overall comfort. In the cooler season, like now, we in the Southeast experience strong winds out of the northwest (and sometimes anywhere between due north and due west) after a cold front passes. Those winds can be very strong and very cold. Shelters/campsites with exposure to northwest winds can be expected to be affected, particularly higher elevation sites with such exposure.

Thanks (sorry for the non-post, but its the only way I know to save a thread)!

Don't forget the forecasts and altitude and verifying the above posts add and subtract 3-5 degrees cus they simply are forecasts.
