When expecting cold with winds, is there much difference between tenting at Carter Gap Shelter or Betty Creek? Both are marked with good water sources.

I would say betty creek is more down in a gully with more trees, so it may fair better than carter gap, that is my 2 cents. Have a good hike.

Carter Gap is not sheltered at all. If I was expecting a good bit of wind I would choose Betty Creek.

Carter Gap gets some amazing winds coming through. That's the only place we've ever had a tree come down right next to the tent. Not fun. Betty Creek is a cool place, as is Beech Gap.

I think it will come down to just how bad the weather really is and what type of sleep system you are carrying. In really severe weather, I might opt to stay the shelter. Betty Gap, Mooney Gap, and BearPen Gap are all good locations for camping with decent water sources.

I remember last spring i camped at Carter Gar shelter, but the people who camped at Betty Creek woke up in the middle of a lake. It rained pretty decent for 18 hours straight.

Rain won't be an issue when I am there. We are about to get a lot of rain soon but it should be over by Tues morn. I'll be there Wed night.

I've camped at Carter before. I just don't remember much about it. I'll be aiming for Betty

I tented in shelter early jan with 19 degrees and freezing rain. The shelter is nice and served me well

If you tent IN the shelter in March, they may throw you off the gap.

I've stayed at both locations.... Betty Creek is a great campsite, that creek is a short walk down the side trail, and closer to Albert Mtn for the next morning.

The Carter Gap Shelter area also has great tent sites. :)
