depends on how big your seven year old. Mine just graduated from his REI Sprig (which he used while hiking at 5 and 6) to his sisters' handmedown Deuter Fox 30. His sisters (8 and 10) just graduated up to new GoLite Jams. The Fox 30 weighs 80oz dry whereas the Sprig weighed 12oz. So it's a big leap. The girls meanwhile cut their weight by 50 ounces with the Jam. There may be lighter options out there that still have the straps and buckles you might want. Otherwise, a good day pack could do the trick.

Deuter junior. 18 Lt comes in several colors about $40.

Don't put anything in it except a few snacks, a juice box, a change of socks and whatever toy that they want to bring with them.

Be prepared to carry both the kid and their pack :)

Carry a 2-3yo maybe, 7 yo are more than capable of walking on their own. 5-10 miles max daily.

Took my 7 and 5yo daughters on the Standing Indian loop in 2011. They carried standard kid daypacks/bookbags, with their sleeping pads (trimmed CCF pads), sleeping bags, headlamps, and clothes (spare set of base layers (synth pjs work), socks, hat gloves, rain jackets and fleece). Plus a small water bottle (17oz platypus), and maybe a baggie of gorp.

REI has a good selection of kids packs. Buy, try, return if needed. Repeat until happy. But please don't abuse the return policy

I like the REI Tarn. It's an 18L pack. My four year old has one.

They carried standard kid daypacks/bookbags,

I also found that to be more than adequate.

My kids both used the Deuter Fox 30, which has adjustable torso length. My son was 7 when he started using that pack. It was a good pack, but a bit heavy at around 2 pounds. ULA recently came out with a kid size pack (with adjustable torso length), which I would have bought if it was available when my kids were small. I still have one Dueter Fox 30 let me know if you are interested in it.

Make sure you look at the Osprey Jib especially if your child is tall. The deuter is nice but the osprey has mort adjustability in the hip and the length. The REI pack series has a huge hole in the sizing. They have a great pack for the smaller kids, and a great pack for a teen, but they left the 9-13 year old sized kids out.
My boy used an Osprey Imp, then a jib, and just got an Ace. We really tried to find another brand but found that Osprey has the kids line dialed in.

How much for the kids fox 30? Is it in good shape.
Thx

I wouldn't sweat the weight of the pack. Kids destroy things if the're not sturdy, and sometimes if they are.

My daughter is 9 now but last year we got her an Osprey Ace 48. It's been great so far. It should last her many years.

My 10 year old is very happy with his Osprey Ace and so am I. He complains about everything--except the pack and weight.
