I'd buy it online.
I see it on Amazon, REI and ebay.
Ebay has an interesting article on some states restrictions: http://reviews.ebay.com/States-With-Pepper-Spray-Restrictions?ugid=10000000032578507

Don't buy expensive Bear spray. Go to Walmart and buy Wasp & Hornet Spray for $3.97, will work just as good if needed.

I would also buy online. The are for defense against humans. Bear spray doesn't have those restrictions.

Don't do this. ^^

Anyone that thinks spraying poison into the face of a bear shouldn't be in the backcountry. That's despicable that you would think of doing this, and more so for recommending it.

If you're going to use a spray, then get bear spray.

He's carrying in for "peace of mind" "just in case".

Same thing as hikers who carry guns that never get used.

Pepper spray, MaceŽ and similar less-than-lethal chemical agents are restricted under Massachusetts law and a person must have a Firearms Identification Card (http://www.mass.gov/legis/laws/mgl/140%2D129b.htm) to purchase, possess and carry such items. Based on past events, it is unlikely that persons in Massachusetts should routinely carry pepper spray as a bear defense.

Fortunately, bear spray does not have the same restrictions.

Yes, it is unlikely that a person anywhere would carry pepper spray as a bear defense because it's designed for humans. As such, it has lower concentration, lower range and lower capacity. That's why bear spray is recommended for bears.

Falcon - one in every crowd, it won't work on bears it has not been tested and if you use it on another human which is not part of the instructions you are open for civil and criminal litigation...

you are quoting a myth from the internet.

I saw it last night at my Bass Pro in South Florida. If they sell it here, they probably sell it up your way. Here is closest Bass Pro to Knoxville from their website (41 miles):
300 Cincinnati Mills Dr, Cincinnati, OH 45240(513) 826-5200

granddaughter

Hey, she successfully bought it, it must be good!

I can understand people not testing it, but they should at least have carried it outside for a while so that they'd have some useful feedback.

This is not needed on the AT, not even the couple of places where there are problems with black bears.
If you will be in grizzly country, carry it and practice first. You can buy blank sprays with no pepper for practicing using bear spray, and that seems like a good idea.

Those reviews at Cabelas are pretty funny.
