Roan to the South or Greyson to the North. Can't go wrong either way. Do you like ponies?

Definitely come in from the north (i.e. hike south). The 50 miles south of Damascus on the AT is relatively uninspiring. In the 50 miles to the north you've got the Grayson Highlands and Whitetop. Some of the best trail south of Maine.

40-50 miles going north to Damascus is pretty boring but easy miles from either Watauga lake or Hampton. 40-50 miles heading south will give you ponies, open view through Elk GArdend/Grayson and you can hike the flat Virginia Creeper Trail the last part into Damascus if you choose.
