I'm not prone to quoting sayings but this ran across my Facebook feed and I thought it really applies to hiking:

“Almost anything can be done if one proceeds slowly enough. Often we are discouraged by the enormity of a task or the length of a journey and become impatient with the difficulties we face. We lose faith in ourselves. Patience reminds us that what is in front of us is just this moment, just this step, just this breath.” — Joseph Goldstein

When I'm hiking all I have to do is take the next step. That's it.

On my first backpacking trip in many years, I did the route planning and really overestimated what I could do. Even though I did lots of day hiking prior, it didn't prepare me for the mountains. On the second day, the entire way back to the car was uphill, and I did a lot of 'one more step' chanting in my head.

Mao? I always thought it was Confucious. (Sp?).

It's from Laozi (https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Laozi), the father of Taoism, which was not espoused or supported by Chairman Mao ... but that's beside the point.

My favorite hiking quote probably comes from Donovan, he of 1960s folk music fame. "First, there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWkGs6MxATc) Like most of Donovan's songs, it's best enjoyed when you're frolicking barefoot in a sunny meadow wearing clamdiggers and tie-dye.

...When I'm hiking all I have to do is take the next step. That's it.

And the ability to do that depends on having a good rain jacket. - Confucious

This is my favorite:

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."

There are so many good ones from John Muir- one of my favorites is "The mountains are calling and I must go."

Another one I like is by Edward Abbey " May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, and lead to the most amazing view."
